Here is the earliest known Stevens-Duryea model “L” Stanhope.  It is remarkably advanced for 1903, with a 2 cylinder, 7 Horsepower engine, an individually clutched 3 speed transmission with reverse, and seating for 2 or 4 !   It is engine # 42, and frame # 322, and is listed in the Stevens-Duryea registry.

The body tilts forward to allow full access to the engine and transmission!

And there are the fold-out seating arrangements for your guests!

Look at the Stevens-Duryea rubber floormat – it is the original floormat !

Here we see one of the two cylinders on the right, the giant flywheel in the center, and the combination of gears and chains that put the power to the wheels. This was very, very advanced indeed in 1903.  The engine and transmission were rebuilt a while back, and the car operates beautifully.

Detail of the 3 speed forward, 1 speed reverse transmission. Astonishing !  Each gear setting has it’s own clutch.

Another view of the undercarriage, showing the final drive chain.

The Brass Oiler and the Flywheel.

More Transmission and Clutch mechanism.  I love these early cars that show the evolution of thinking and automotive mechanical design.

This car still has all it’s original wood bodywork, which was repainted sometime around the 1950′s.  Although you can see a few cracks in the finish here and there, the fact that it’s still the original bodywork is very important.   The Patent Leather Fenders are still the originals!

Real and original !

Freshly polished and clearcoated brass accessories
