.

This car has just been released from the estate of the man who owned it since 1972 ! We have the California pink title from ’72, as well as some of these great photos showing the car on vacation.

.

This car was driven regularly until 2012, making some great memories for the owner.  I’d like to think that he’s in the great 2 lane road in the sky, with no traffic and a full tank of gas!

.

And here it is today, a nice old survivor, a tribute to the high quality that Mercedes built into all their cars, especially back then!  Although it’s not a restored car, It’s running and driveable now.  It has a 2.2 Liter 6 cylinder engine, a 4 speed manual transmission – with shifter on the column !  It was originally equipped with Factory Air Conditioning, although the compressor is no longer located under the hood as it should be, instead it’s included with the car.

.

Here it is in action!  It runs and drives fairly well, although I don’t think I would take it on a long vacation now, after just waking it up after 2 years of slumber !

.

There’s the great Mercedes-Benz grille and 3 pointed star hood ornament.

.

These cars look great in black!  Of course, black shows everything too, like the shallow dent in the rear door and the rust spots in all 4 doors!

.

There’s a lot of history with that badge!

.

In 1961, Mercedes Benz thought that THIS was a FIN, bless their 3 pointed hearts !  They had obviously not seen the Cadillac offering of that same year !

.

The rear bumper and trunk both have dents.  I think  any competent bumper refinisher could straighten this bumper, but that is fun that the next owner  gets to have ! Also note that the Sticker is from 2012, but the registration was paid up through July of 2014.  This means there are no Back DMV fees due,  just sales tax  and next years DMV fees if the car stays in California.

.

Here’s a good shot of the right side.  The tires are Michelin radials that look very recent – lots of tread, excellent condition. Note the missing trim strips at the lower edge of the car.

.

Here’s the interior, all stock. Seats were redone in vynil at some point, with the driver’s seat showing a bit of distress and some tears.

.

The guages all work except the gas guage, which flutters quite a bit.  It shows 27,000 miles, which has surely rolled over from 100,000.  It’s sold mileage exempt.

.

There’s the dash, and “Kuhlmeister” AC unit. The AC is not working, nor is the heater.   Note the 8 Track AM/FM radio, which actually puts out some noise.

.

Big Mercedes Steering wheel,  in nice shape except for the crack on the top.

.

The Carpeting is original German squareweave, but it shows it’s age, especially in the driver’s area.

.

The driver’s seat.

.

The  Rear Seat.

.

The package tray, showing the bare sheetmetal.

.

Rear Doorpanel

.

Driver Doorpanel.

.

Front right doorpanel.

.

The little engine that could, the mercedes 2.2 liter 6 cylinder.  It fires right up and hums like a sewing machine.   I notice some tailpipe smoke when I fire it up, but it diminishes as the car is driven.

.

Stock and authentic.

.

There’s the overly complex air cleaner assembly !

.

A good old car that just needs a bit of love. The paint is fairly old.

.

The floors are really nice and solid, if you look at the video, I show the car up on the lift in more detail.

.

Excellent original floorpans.

.

More clean sheetmetal underneath.

.

It’s a nice old car, one that, with some TLC  and love, could be returned to it’s original glory.
