.

By 1936 the Packard Super 8 had a dual throat downdraft carburetor, with automatic choke.

.

Another view of the engine.  The engine runs great, and is assisted by high-speed rear axle gears with a 4.06 ratio,  which makes high speed touring easier on the car.

.

The original data plate is an important part of this car, the 951 designates a ’36 Super 8 Phaeton,  and this is the 5th car built, since they started the sequential numbers at 200.  It was sold new at Packard Motor Car Company of Boston, the New England area Packard Distributor.

.

The engine serial number corresponds to the ’35 Super 8 series,  identical except for the serial number to the ’36 Super 8.

Wonderful in profile.  Let’s review why the late Packard Twelve is one of the best driving Classic Cars ever built – There’s the 160 Horsepower 473 Cubic inch engine, with torque like a steam locomotive. There’s the silky smooth synchro-mesh 3 speed transmission. There’s the independent front suspension and powerful hydraulic brakes. And the wonderful Bragg-Kliesrath vacuum power brake and power clutch assist, which make pushing those big pedals a pleasure instead of a chore.  Take a drive with me in the videotape just below!

It’s very much of the late 1930’s streamline moderne era, – the way they did the fenderline and sidemounts give the effect of making a tall car look much lower and more sleek.  And of course the super low top when folded down helps the look too.

IMG_9687

.

Looks great in any setting!

IMG_9658

.

Here it is with the top raised.

IMG_9661

.

High quality top, showing just a bit of age.

IMG_9678

The black and maroon work great together!

IMG_9680

The ’38 senior  Packard dashboard is one of the all time great dashboards – 5 dials rimmed in chrome and accented by chrome ribbed background – WOW!

IMG_9683

Nice Banjo steering wheel with Packard crest horn button.  I noticed the temperature gauge doesn’t seem to register, and possibly the gas gauge isn’t working.

IMG_9684

’38 only ribbed doorhandles and window cranks

IMG_9693

There it is, the 473 Cubic inch V-12.  Fresh from a valve job, and it runs great!  They put a gorgeous porcelain intake and exhaust manifold on it too!

IMG_9691

This 1940 Packard 180 Limousine was Packard’s top of the line car – model 1808, body type 1350. It has been in the same California family since the 1950’s, with appreciative care and maintenance.  It was restored at Bill Borzi’s California shop in 1990, and It is a delightful car to drive, with excellent power, smooth and silent transmission, and working factory overdrive!

IMG_8703.

That is a big, beautiful car!  Even though it’s on the longest wheelbase of 148 inches, the overall length is only 225 inches – or 18 feet 9 inches – so as long as you have a 20 foot deep garage, it’ll fit!  By comparison, the 50’s / 60’s Buick Electra 225  was so named because it was 225 inches long

IMG_8686.

The Wilshire green paint was done in lacquer by Bill Borzi’s well known shop back in about 1990.  Although it shows a bit of age – a few chips, scratches and spots of lacquer check – it still looks very nice.  Good enough to bring to a show, just not enough to win trophies.

The 180 Packards of 1940 were made of giant slabs of plastic. It was the early plastic,  leading to some imperfections with age.  This dash fits that bill, it’s good but does show a few places of not looking new.

IMG_8129.

Black California license plate!  Known California history to the 1950’s. It was sold new in Chicago according to the “1940 Packard 1808 Registry”. The car is super solid.

IMG_8131.

Here’s the 356 engine, the correct original one.  AND, look at that CYLINDER HEAD!  I have never seen one of these before, it’s an Edmunds finned aluminum cylinder head!  A very rare and cool accessory.  And also note the modern rotary A/C compressor.  If you go on a caravan during the summer, you will be the most popular driver on the tour!

IMG_8132.

The driver’s side of the engine. This engine runs great! It has great oil pressure, runs smoothly, starts easily hot or cold, runs cool with a brand new radiator, and has all the power you should expect in a Packard 180!

A few paint flaws, shown here up close.

This was Packard’s top of the line, most expensive car available in 1940.  It had the most powerful engine, the 356 Cubic inch straight 8,  factory overdrive,  and luxurious wool broadcloth rear compartment with leather up front for the driver.   It’s equipped with Divider Window, Jump seats, radio, heater, Overdrive, sidemounts, bumperguards,  Cormorant mascot, and inner wheel beauty rings.  Offered by The Vault Classic Cars dealership, Fullerton, CA . 714-401-1047

IMG_7468.

This car was sold new in Boston, Massachusetts.  It made its way to California by the 1960’s, when well known Packard Collector Duncan Langton bought it.  In 1972 he sold it to the next owner, who sold it to us just recently.  He had used it for club tours and events, but it went into garage storage in 1989,

40Packard180LimoResize.

It’s always a great moment when a big classic is freed from storage!  It was stored inside, on jackstands, and those tires ( which look like they don’t have many miles on them, thick tread ) pumped up and held air!

IMG_7470.

Although it’s a full size car, on the 148″ wheelbase, it’s only about 19 feet long, so if you have a normal sized 20 foot garage, it will fit!

IMG_7471.

The paint is shiny, but it’s older and has a fair number of scratches and flaws.

IMG_7472.

The Black license plates are included.  It might be possible for the new owner to get them re-assigned to the car based on the old registration slips that come with the car.  Of course it has a clean California title.

IMG_7474.

The cloisonne emblem, the hubcap, the inner trim ring, and the outer trim ring all show here.

IMG_7480.

More cloisonne – which is a red ceramic  on top of a chrome emblem.  The chrome on this car is all there but it’s likely all original and mostly very dull, with some pitting also.

IMG_7476.

The right front fender has some problems & damage at the edge.

IMG_7477.

Its up, running, and alive, and a worthy candidate for restoration.

IMG_7486.

This is the actual original interior!  Still in pretty decent shape, with the front portion of the lambs wool carpet still intact.

IMG_7490.

Overall still pretty good, but note the upper part of the rear seat upholstery has some tears.

IMG_7493.

here’s a good view of the lambswool carpet.

IMG_7491.

And the jumpseats and lap robe sash.

IMG_7495.

Original doorpanel materials.

IMG_7496.

Here’s a good view of the all plastic 180 dashboard, the radio speaker and heater.  The plastic is the original, and has significant warping.

IMG_7483.

The leather front seat might be original, and you can see some age and cracking to the leather.

IMG_7485.

The driver’s view.  The instruments work , as do the headlights, tail and brakelights.

IMG_7505.

Here’s the mighty 356.  After an oil change and filter, fresh gas,  new fuel pump diaphragm, and some carburetor work,  we have an engine that starts right up, runs quietly with no lifter noise.   I bought the complete Kanter brake kit – Master, wheel cylinders, hoses, springs and shoes – and had it professionally installed.  So now it has brakes, too!

IMG_7502.

All stock and original.  The wiring is the original cloth backed stuff.

IMG_7503.

Here’s a look at the firewall, which is painted Inverness Green – which was the original color of this car!

IMG_7498.

The original data plate, mounted to the cowl, shows the prefix 1350, which is the code for a 1940 180 limousine on the 148 inch wheelbase. Looks like it was sold July 11, 1940 in Boston.

IMG_7482.

It’s been fun to liberate this fine old car from long term storage, and wake it up!  Now it’s time for the next owner to take it to the next level.

This 1936 Packard 1401 Coupe-Roadster has been in our family since 1954!  That’s when Dad purchased it from a police impound/ tow yard for $50.  Yes, that’s right. Fifty Bucks!  It ran, but the fuel pump was bad, so he had his friend Karl sit on the fender and pour gas in the carburetor, and drove it home !  Safety First!   Mom and Dad used to drive this car in the Northern Illinois region CCCA and Packards of Chicagoland events before we moved to California back in the early 70’s

IMG_6908.

After a beautiful restoration in 2006, it’s a striking and great running car in Packard Cream with Chinese Red accents, right from the Packard color chart!  It’s a Full CCCA Classic, welcome at all of their tours and shows, as well as AACA and Packard Clubs.

IMG_6909.

The defining feature of the Coupe-Roadster was the Rumbleseat!  it was listed officially by Packard as a 2/4 Passenger car!

IMG_6923.

The proportions are exactly right!  Long hood, sidemounts, and sleek roadster body style.

IMG_6903.

Lovely Chrome, Streamlined headlight buckets, and the icing on the cake, the pinstripes that match the wheel color!

IMG_6905.

Beautifully done fresh leather interior.   The pattern was taken from the ORIGINAL seat leather, which had been preserved nicely underneath the early 60’s interior.  So, this is done EXACTLY to the original pattern.  I include the original material with the car, just in case some wise guy wants to argue with the pleat spacing!

This 1953 Packard Caribbean was totally professionally restored, with photo and receipt documentation, and it won many national trophies! It’s absolutely beautiful in Packard Maroon.  The Packard Caribbean was the glamor car in 1953, with styling taken from the Packard Pan American special.   Only 750 were built.

IMG_6122 (800x533).

The Caribbean came standard with chrome wire wheels, hoodscoop, chrome fender openngs and chrome tailfins!  It had the top of the line 327 straight 8, with five main bearings  and a 4 barrel carburetor for full power!  Packard’s Ultramatic automatic transmission with lockup converter put the power to the ground and Easamatic power brakes make for an effortless driving experience, and hydraulic power windows, seat and top are delightful power accessories.

This is a great car – a show winner that has had consistent maintenance and upgrades to keep it fresh looking and running great!

IMG_6142 (800x533).

I have to admit an emotional connection to this car – my folks had a  different Maroon ’53 Caribbean as their everyday driver back in the 1960’s, and it took us on many family trips and vacations, as well as the epic journey from Chicago to New Orleans to pick up a ’30 Packard 745 Victoria.  But, as Dad said once – “you can’t keep ’em all son!”   It’s been fun to have it in the showroom and drive it a bit,  and it’s time for a new owner to keep the Caribbean flame!

This 1947 Packard Custom Super 8, model 2106, is an excellent, authentic, and tour-ready car!

IMG_6020.

A spectacular car, in the correct, original colors of Coral Blue and Vanderbilt Grey. Note the cormorant mascot, the foglamps, and front bumperguard

IMG_6025.

The Custom Super 8 was the top of the Line, with 356 Cubic inch straight 8 – good for over 100 MPH when new, and more than enough to propel the car at freeway / interstate speeds today.  It has factory overdrive, a key feature that allows sustained high speed operation.  The Custom super 8 included luxurious interior features including individually wrapped seat springs, chrome steering column and parking brake handle, and front to back headliner seams and cloisonne enamel hubcap emblems in Packard’s signature hexagon style.  Radio and combination dash/underseat heater were standard.  Additional accessories on this car include the Cormorant mascot , roof mounted antenna, goddess of speed hood ornament, front and rear bumperguards, and fog lamps.

IMG_6028.

I love the foglamps, they work, too!

IMG_6032.

When I had it painted, I worked with the paint shop to get the colors exactly right – the correct tone and shade, as well as the correct amount of metallic.  The 1940’s paint colors had much less metallic than they do today,  so we had to reduce the amount of metallic to make it match the factory color chip exactly.

IMG_6029.

The fenderskirts are the icing on the styling cake!  The gas flap of course leads to the gas filler, which on these cars has a combination vent / whistle indicator.  When you’re filling the tank, it makes a slight whistle until it’s full, so you know when to stop without overflowing.  Packard was always thinking about how to make things better.

IMG_6030.

That Yosemite sticker was applied to this car at Yosemite!  It has been a fun, reliable tour car for us on the 2007 Arizona , 2008 Montana, 2009 California/Nevada, 2010 Pacific Northwest, 2011 New Mexico, and 2013 Rediscover America Caravan.   We drove it to and from each caravan, and always made it there and back with flying colors!   A program of constant maintenance and improvements made this reliability possible.  Before each Caravan, I would go through the car and identify things that needed maintenance, and then get that work done before the tour.  Over the years we’ve put in new correct wiring, radiator, and of course regular oil changes.  It has both mechanical and electric fuel pumps, and a hidden pusher radiator fan for super hot days.  We’ve driven this car over 10,000 foot mountain passes and across the burning desert, and always made it !  Most recently, the transmission and overdrive were completely rebuilt, and a new clutch and pressure plate installed, along with brand new American Classic whitewall Radials.

the seats are done in the correct pattern, with blue cloth and white textured piping, just like original.  The fabric is a modern fabric but very difficult to tell from wool.  The carpeting was done in wool cut pile, bonded to a heavy rubber backing, just like the original Moss-Tred carpeting.

IMG_6049.

I had the steering wheel re-cast with matching gearshift knob, They’re  absolutely beautiful.

IMG_6050.

The dashboard chrome is excellent. All of the guages work.  the speedometer was rebuilt, and works like it should.  Lights, horn, turn signals and wipers ( note – factory electric wipers ) all work properly.   However, the radio and clock aren’t working.

IMG_4611.

Delightful

IMG_4558.

A car that can be taken to shows and events, and driven there at freeway speeds!

This 1942 Packard 160 Convertible is a beautifully and recently restored car.  A full CCCA Classic, with powerful 356 cubic inch straight 8, and factory overdrive for high speed cruising!  These top of the line Packard super 8’s represent a peak design for the marque – a car with enough power, and engineering refinement to be capable of driving in our modern highway traffic,  yet still retaining the classic design features that we classic car enthusiasts love.

A beautiful car!

This 1933 Packard 1001 Roadster is a beautifully restored car!  the Classic Car Club of America awarded it first place, senior and premiere trophies in national competition, that’s how nice it is!

IMG_4444.

That couldn’t be any prettier! Chrome 17″ wire wheels, sidemounts with the proper metal covers, and goddess of Speed mascot!

IMG_4473.

CCCA First, Senior and Premiere

.

IMG_4429.

The ’33 Fenders are Packard’s first – and I argue the best – treatment of skirted fenders.

IMG_4427.

Note the rumbleseat and golf bag door

IMG_4435.

And of course the working thermostatic grille shutters.

IMG_4443.

Sparkling.

IMG_4452.

Spectacular

IMG_4457.

The Goddess of Speed!

IMG_4458.

Chrome wire wheels are the best!  And, new for 1933 were the one piece outer rims, replacing the lockring of the previous year.  Packard was constantly improving their cars.

IMG_4460.

Nice Luggage Rack and rumbleseat.

IMG_4474.

Beautiful burl pattern dashboard, and crisp, sharp gauges.

IMG_4475.

IMG_4472.

Factory dry element air cleaner

IMG_4470.

Exceptionally clean and nice!  and, it runs as good as it looks!

IMG_4466.

Original splash pans

IMG_4494.

Clean underneath, too!  Painting the chassis to match the body color was a Packard option.

IMG_4487.

tail light detail, I like the ridges on the glass.

IMG_4493.

And the sharp engraving on the headlights!

IMG_4495.

A spectacular car!

This 1933 Packard 1001 Coupe-Roadster is gorgeous, and ready to show or tour right now!  It has Packard’s famous 320 Cubic Inch straight 8 engine, the newly synchronized 3 speed transmission, Downdraft dual throat carburetor, mechanical fuel pump, and excellent mechanical brakes.  Offered by The Vault Classic Cars dealership, Fullerton, CA 92831.

IMG_4432.

Everything about this car is right – the new for ’33 skirted fenders, the chrome 17 inch wire wheels and sidemounts, the rumbleseat, and the V shaped grille.

This 1941 Packard 120 Convertible Coupe has been in Southern California since at least 1955. It’s full of equipment, including 288 cubic inch straight 8 engine, 3 speed transmission with overdrive,  radio, heater, factory inner and outer  beauty rings,  bumper guards and the glass-winged Goddess of speed hood ornament!  I also note what’s left of the electromatic clutch system.   It’s complete, and ready to restore, but it doesn’t run.   Or maybe, dare I even say it, resto-mod it?

IMG_4630.

The Packard 120 was a tremendous value when it was new – all that Packard quality at a very reasonable price!

IMG_4707.

Here it is in 1955 California, with the same engine that’s in it now, D314825 !

IMG_4621.

Can you imagine this car all finished?

41Packard120Chicago_1 (800x515).

One day a few years ago, Dad and I were out hunting for cars to buy – and the ’41 Packard 120 showed up on the interweb radar.   It really grabbed him because it was just like the second car he ever bought, shown in this photo.  That car replaced the supercharged Graham sharknose that dissolved it’s cylinder head back sometime in 1948.  Surely that first ’41 Packard is long gone, but here was something that sparked the good memory of Packard driving back when Packard was still in business!  So we bought it and brought it back to the shop.

IMG_4622.

Unfortunately, Dad’s gone now,  and I think it’s time for a new owner to bring this car to the next stage.

IMG_4624.

The glass is good, the windows roll up and down.

IMG_4627.

A good solid place to start

IMG_4628.

These plates were in the trunk – look at the 1977 Sticker!  It’s registered to modern plates now, with the engine number – the same one as on that 1955 registration slip – as the VIN number.

IMG_4650.

that’s the original firewall tag, and the 1499 prefix tells us this is a genuine 120 Convertible coupe – or as the factory had it, the “Coupe-Convertible, 2 – 4 Passengers”

.

IMG_4638.

Dashboard intact, plastic is pretty good.

IMG_4640.

Rear seat.  Yes, it will need to be restored.  Or, you know, make it run and cruise it as a barn find!

IMG_4641.

The top mechanism is all there, and the header latch works too.

IMG_4652.

Here it is with the combination top / sunroof up !  🙂

IMG_4653.

All there and ready to restore!

IMG_4643.

Glass winged Goddess of Speed mascot

IMG_4647.

So there’s the 8 cylinder engine – zero compression when it came in, now between zero and 45 PSI after the in-car valve job.  Still not enough to make it run.  It’s either rebuild it, or LS-6 it!

IMG_4649.

Driver’s side of the engine bay.

IMG_4691IMG_4692IMG_4694.

the floors, frame, and under the trunk are nice and solid, original sheetmetal.

IMG_4636.

Even though it’s a California car, it looks like it got rained on and had some rust where the water collected

IMG_4635IMG_4704.

Needs a bit of sheetmetal repair – I’m just not the guy for it!

IMG_4656.

The key works in the ignition.

IMG_4657.

Here’s the radio.

IMG_4659.

And the Packard Heater.

IMG_4658.

It’s always 5 minutes after 3, 1941

IMG_4632.

Great lines, and a great start on a fun car

IMG_4629.

Here’s a good view of the inner beauty rings – they run right up to the hubcap, and have the same 4 ridge contours as the hubcap.  the missing rear fender strip is included, it’s just a little tweaked.

IMG_4633.

1939 was a great year for Packard – the factory overdrive was introduced that year, which was a game changer for high speed touring. It was the final year of refinement for the 320 Cubic inch straight 8,  with dual downdraft Stromberg carburetor, and 130 Horsepower.  The extensive use of Plastic in the dashboard was maximized in ’39, and this car has a spectacular restored dashboard.

IMG_3983.

The grille shutters alternated between chrome and body color in 1939.  These grille shutters & thermostat work properly.

Beatifully finished in Cavalier Maroon.  This car is extremely rare – according to Bev Kime’s authoritative book on Packard, only 672 Packard 180’s of ALL body styles were built for the short 1942 Model year.

IMG_3931.

The Formal Sedan body style was a window into the thinking of the upper crust world of the time – This car bridged the gap between a divider window limousine, which of course MUST be operated by a chauffeur,  and the slightly more modern customer who, by 1942, realized that Packard had made these cars so smooth, so quiet, so powerful, and so easy to drive, that he could actually drive the car himself if he chose!  The divider window was still there in case he had to really show off in front of all his peers and hire a chauffeur.

IMG_3935.

The side grills are horizontal in 1942.

IMG_3934.

This car is on the 138″ wheelbase, leaving enough room for 1 jumpseat in back.

IMG_3968.

The hubcaps are specific to 1942 also, with a double ridge at the edge of the cap.

IMG_3940.

Beautiful.

IMG_3958.

Beautiful dashboard – note the radio blocker plate – the original owner might have been fearful of distractions to the Chauffeur!  The dash looks like new.

IMG_3942.

Just as it appeared in the Packard Showroom!

IMG_3944.

Spectacular!

IMG_3957.

Here’s a view of the tan wool interior.  Since this was intended as an owner/driver car, the front seat was upholstered in cloth, rather than the more austere black leather for a chauffeur only limousine.

IMG_3945.

The window frames are real wood, with german silver inlay pieces.  The 180 got the most deluxe trim!

IMG_3947.

there’s the divider window in the down position

Sumptuous!

IMG_3950.

Here’s the single jumpseat, and the storage compartment on the right side.

IMG_3953.

And the lighted Vanity Case.

IMG_3955.

This compartment has the clock as an outer adornment.

IMG_3956.

And the little triangular footrests too.

IMG_3965.

the Classic Car Club of America doesn’t hand these senior badges out lightly – the car has to win a first place in national competition!

IMG_3977.

Nicely detailed engine bay.  The engine is the correct for ’42 CE prefix 356 cubic inch straight 8 engine – one of Packards crowning acheivements in smoothness and power.   Just an example of what makes this a great engine – the crankshaft counterweights are extra big and heavy to put the engine in proper balance. Packard had to design the crank weights to be bolted on and then the bolts welded.  The end result was an extremely heavy but vibration free rotating assembly.

IMG_3974.

Another change for ’42 – the Carter WDO carburetor, with starter switch integral to the carburetor.

IMG_3975.

Nicely finished! This engine had factory hydraulic lifters too, for silent valvetrain operation.  What we are looking at here is the basis of the modern automobile as we know it today!  Packard was an engineering driven company, and they let their technical skills be known by their advanced products.  When you spent your money on a Packard, you got your money’s worth!

IMG_3980.

These are the power window solenoids mounted to the firewall.

IMG_3870.

Looks great inside or out!

IMG_3931.

Impressive!

IMG_3933.

Beautiful. Formal. Dignified.  Capable of high speed modern freeway driving!

This 1930 Packard 745 Roadster comes from very long ownership, with provenance to Fred and Carol Mauck and Harold Crosby before the Maucks.  It carries CCCA Senior badge from 1973.  Fred and Carol maintained the car beautifully, and it looks great and drives exactly like it’s supposed to.

IMG_1217.

The very definition of a sporting Classic Packard – a 2 passenger body on the longest available wheelbase, with the big 385 cubic inch super 8  engine and 6 wire wheels ! Spectacular!

IMG_1218.

The 745 had the big headlights with green cat-eye reflectors on the headlight shell, as well as the triangular base for the radiator cap. Obviously the wheelbase was long, at 145 inches, with the additional length all in the hood!

IMG_1221.

Note the stoneshield and initials badge mounted to the headlight bar.

IMG_1227.

It couldn’t be any prettier!

IMG_1231.

I especially like the chrome wires and hub with the painted rims.

IMG_1240.

Beautiful!

IMG_1244.

Gorgeous!

IMG_1249.

Wow!

IMG_1254.

CCCA first place trophy winner – in 1973 !

IMG_1256.

Another great feature of this car – a rumbleseat!

IMG_1265.

Beautiful driving compartment – fresh leather, beautiful dashboard, and lovely steering wheel.

IMG_1267.

Correct firewall pad, correct wiring, and beautiful – and accurate – finish on the dashboard.

IMG_1270.

Very Pretty indeed! note the correct butterscotch colored knobs, the correct ignition switch mounted to the coil behind the dashboard (there’s no key bezel, because the ignition switch is supported from behind by the coil mount) and the cigar lighter.

IMG_1271.

Beautiful and correct steering wheel.

IMG_1269.

the gauges work and register properly, except for the speedometer and liquid fuel gauge.

IMG_1259.

There is the powerful 385 cubic inch straight eight. It runs great, and is enjoyable to drive.

IMG_1260.

Correct colors and finishes.  Note the Bijur chassis lubricator, the purolator oil filter, and Sparton horn. Also note the fan shroud – that was how Packard took up the additional 5 inches of space between the engine and the radiator caused by the 145 inch chassis versus the 140 inch chassis.

IMG_1262.

Here’s the manifold side – with proper Detroit Lubricator carburetor, and North East distributor.   Fred and Carol Drove – and maintained – their car, so it’s not surprising to see some porcelain chipped from the manifold.  This car does run sweetly, that’s for sure.

The history trail of this car really ends with Harold Crosby, who did the original restoration in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s. We are not able to know  any earlier history on the car.

IMG_1240.

It’s a spectacular car, it’s been to the right shows, and it has an illustrious ownership history !

1954 Packard Pacific Hardtop . Top of the '54 Packard lineup. 359 straight 8 , 212 HP, 4 barrel carb, ultramatic.

1954 Packard Pacific Hardtop . Top of the ’54 Packard lineup. 359 straight 8 , 212 HP, 4 barrel carb, ultramatic.  Rare car, nice shape!  SOLD, off to Florida

This 1948 Packard Custom 8 Limousine is extremely rare, and is in beautiful condition, both operationally and cosmetically. It has the big, powerful 356 cubic inch Packard straight 8,  3 speed manual with working Factory Overdrive. It has radio, heater, division window,  Electromatic Clutch, Cormorant mascot, and the correct – and rare! 16 inch wheels that were specific to the Packard Long wheelbase cars that year.

IMG_0918.

Look at the deep reflections in the Packard Blue paint, the cloisonne emblems on the hubcaps, and the crosshatch or egg-crate grille that tells the world it’s the most expensive car in the Packard Line.

IMG_0919.

The chrome – all 40 acres of it – is in excellent shape, and the black and gold Calif0rnia license plate speaks to the car’s long California history.

IMG_0921.

Note the foglamps, a nice accessory.

IMG_0926.

The crosshatch grille theme carries through to the rear of the car – letting those who follow this car – which is pretty much every other car on the road! know that this is the top model, the best of the breed, the most expensive thing you could buy from Packard.

IMG_0932.

Wow! Those 16 inch wide whitewalls really look great and they fill up the wheel opening nicely.

IMG_0929.

AS you can see from the photo, the paint quality is extremely high. It is an older paint job, and there are a few very minor flaws, but this car really does look terrific!

IMG_0934.

Packard Styling won awards in 1948 – tasteful, streamlined, and rich.  I love the stainless speed lines that tie the front and rear bumpers together.

IMG_0936.

That’s a long car, with a 148″ wheelbase!  But really, not excessively long – the overall length compared to a modern limousine is quite modest.

IMG_0940.

Here’s what mattered when the car was new – deluxe and luxurious accomodations for the rear seat passengers! Beautiful wool broadcloth with white piping, and mosstred carpeting, which on this car is still the original!  Mosstred was a cut pile wool carpet that was bonded to a rubberized backing, and fit exactly to the dimensions of the floor. It was super heavy and fit flush and flat to the floor.

IMG_0939.

There’s so much legroom that a separate footrest is provided! It’s hinged, and can be either forward or back against the seat bottom.

IMG_0941.

Here are the jumpseats, properly trimmed in wool, and ready for use

IMG_0942.

this view shows the bulkhead, the lap robe rail, and the division window crank, as well as some of the beautiful woodgraining on the window surrounds.

IMG_0944.

Lovely and correct doorpanel and trim

IMG_0948.

Gorgeous dashboard!

IMG_0950.

And a beautiful Steering wheel, with a brilliant, clear, and wonderful center emblem. Wow!

IMG_0949.

Brilliant, clear, and fully operational instruments, including the clock!

IMG_0951.

Even the radio works properly!

IMG_0953.

The 356 Cubic inch engine – which runs exactly like it should, and is done in the correct for ’48 Packard Grey – the green engine paint’s final year was 1947.

IMG_0954.

Rewired when it was restored. Here we see the voltage regulator, overdrive controller, and off to the left, above the starter and mounted to the engine, the electromatic clutch  vacuum valve.

IMG_0958.

Here’s a good view of the valve side of the engine, with the correct carburetor and manifolds. Also note the presence of the fuel pump heat shield and the louvered splash pans.

IMG_0957.

The heater box shows in this photo, as does the wiper motor. the wipers and horn work great.

IMG_0927.

It’s difficult to find a fault with this car, but I’ll do it anyway – the chrome on the valence crosshatch has the ever so slightest age / pits showing. can’t see it in the photo but it’s there up close.  I also noted a couple paint scratches on the lower left edge of the car, down by the stainless speed lines.

IMG_0930.

A wonderful car with great history, and truly ready to enjoy right now!

1931 Packard 833 Limousine, beautifully restored, offered by the Vault Classic Cars dealership. This car comes from an estate, where the owner since 1965 lovingly restored it, and went on to win every trophy there is to win!

IMG_0959.

Absolutely beautiful in Dark Packard Blue with black fenders and moldings! The paint job is 10 miles deep and smooth as glass, an extremely high quality effort!

IMG_0965.

This photo shows some great accessories – dual Pilot Ray driving lights that move with the steering wheel, Super 8 Packard headlamps with the green cat-eye jewel, radiator stoneshield, and Adonis mascot. And look at the reflections in the door, and how perfectly the doors fit!

IMG_0964.

Lots of beautiful Chrome!

IMG_0960.

The dual rearmounted spares pay off in this view – the fender sweep can be fully appreciated!

IMG_0971.

Dual Rearmount spares are the best – and so are dual tailights, an unusual and rare addition. Note They work great, too, the wiring on this car was properly done when it was restored.  In the 1931 Packard Tail light assembly the red was the tail light, the amber the brake light, and the clear the backup light.

IMG_0967.

The high quality and attention to detail and authenticity show up in this photo

IMG_0973.

Note the pinstriping surrounding the louver panel – a nice touch!

IMG_0975.

Those big giant Super 8 headlights – an option on the 833 – work great!

IMG_0976.

And so do the Pilot rays, controlled by a tasteful and period-correct looking switch under the dashboard.

IMG_0977.

There’s the Packard Mascot “Adonis”.   Packard took some inspiration from the ancient Greeks here.

IMG_0979

.

Dual Wipers are on a central mount.

IMG_0992.

I think the Chauffer would have gotten in trouble for leaving his hat and gloves in the back seat when this car was new. And it does, indeed, look new here, correctly and beautifully redone. Wow!

IMG_0999.

Note the microphone, clipped just ahead of the arm rest – so you could tell the Chauffer “Dude, you left your hat back here!”

IMG_0995.

the jumpseats are correctly done and fully operational.

IMG_0982.

The dashboard is gorgeous, and correct! The instruments work except for the liqui-static fuel gauge. Even though the 1930 and 1931 Packards are very similar, they also have a number of differences – the 1931 Steering wheel was more “Art Deco”, the dashboard changed a bit, the hood latches became integral to the hood.

IMG_0986

.

This car has an Altimeter, and it appears to work, it has the altitude of the Vault Classic Cars showroom right!

IMG_0983.

Excellent Black leather in front

IMG_0984.

The window surrounds are absolutely beautiful.

IMG_0998.

Beautiful Beautiful! and of course the screws are slotted oval heads with countersunk washer, just like they are supposed to be! That’s the kind of thing the show judges look for.

IMG_1001.

The 320 Cubic inch straight 8 looks exactly as it should.  It runs great too!

IMG_1008.

Here we are on the intake & exhaust side, with the extremely rare air cleaner and Detroit Lubricator carburetor showing.  Also note the new for 1931 Fuel pump mounted to the front of the engine, a HUGE improvement over 1930’s vacuum tank.

IMG_1005.

that’s the original firewall tag, showing new delivery from Earle C. Anthony in Los Angeles.

IMG_0966.

A beautiful car, with wonderful accessories and great history!

IMG_0774

.

Here’s a beautiful Packard 160 Super 8 Club Coupe – it’s a factory 4 passenger car, with a rear seat for your friends! And of course it’s a CCCA Full Classic, so it is welcome at all the CCCA shows and tours, as well as AACA, and the Packard Club. Offered by The Vault Classic Cars dealership, Fullerton, CA. 714-401-1047

.

It has the big powerful 356 straight 8 engine,  working factory Overdrive, Radio, Packard Heater ( Important since it was sold new in Idaho!)  Luggage rack, twin sidemounts, Glass Winged Goddess of Speed mascot, Packard driving lamps, backup lamp, fenderskirts, and the piece de resistance, a Packard locking gas cap!

IMG_0775.

It’s finished in the factory Packard color, Inverness green, a nice medium metallic green.  Henry Ford did not work at Packard, and they did not all have to be black!  If you stepped up to a Super 8 Packard you had your choice of a rich color palette.

IMG_0776.

A great profile.

IMG_0773.

And bumperguards too!

IMG_0779.

Pretty!

IMG_0782.

Love the Goddess of Speed – with the glass wing and speed lines!

IMG_0783.

Packard Road – Fog lamps!

IMG_0786.

Here’s the passenger side, with the dual sidemounts showing.

IMG_0788.

Very streamlined.  Which is handy at the freeway speeds, courtesy of 160 Horsepower and overdrive.

IMG_0789.

Very, very nice.

IMG_0792.

This is a very , very nice car, although it’s not a show car, there are some rock chips and paint flaws that would cost points at a national event. The chrome is very nice, but there are a few spots that show some chrome blushing, particularly on the hood side louvers.

IMG_0795.

The optional luggage rack made it necessary to use the Bullet style tail lights carried over from 1939 so the tail lights would be visible when a trunk was mounted.  A non-luggage rack car would have had the more usual 1940 style  tail light.

IMG_0797.

there’s the back up light.

IMG_0811.

The dashboard is very nice, with excellent plastic and nice woodgraining.  We can see the heater down below, as well as the radio speaker towards the right.

IMG_0805.

The upholstery is done in leather, a correct choice for the coupes, you could have had either cloth or leather. This interior is nicely done, with just a bit of age showing on the driver’s seat back.

IMG_0806.

Nice doorpanel.

IMG_0807.

The club coupe had a back seat – the business coupe did not.  This is a club coupe.

IMG_0827.

The 1375 number shown here on the firewall tag tells us this was a Club Coupe 160.  This is the original firewall tag.

IMG_0808.

More of the rear seat. There’s a blemish on the sidepanel.

IMG_0814.

Good view of radio speaker and heater.

IMG_0816.

Nice dash and gauges. The Speedometer, gas gauge and amp meter work great, the Temp and Oil guages have been bypassed for an under-dash unit, which works fine. Good for touring.

IMG_0819.

The runningboards are excellent, with nice, live rubber and the proper ribbed chrome accent pieces.  And the step plates are nice too!

IMG_0810.

Nice headliner.

IMG_0828.

This very nice 1940 senior steering wheel is being included, since the unit on the car is from ’41.

IMG_0803.

Nicely trimmed trunk. Where’s the spare tire?  Sidemounts!

IMG_0804.

Clean!

IMG_0822.

There’s the 356 Straight 8 . It runs beautifully, nice and smooth, all the power it’s supposed to have, and it’s the original engine too as we’ll see from examining the engine number

IMG_0821.

C5 is the proper number for the 1940 Packard Super 8 160 Engine.  Packard didn’t match the engine and chassis number, so the C5 is our identifier, and it is referenced in “The Packard Story” by Turnquist.

IMG_0823.

the wiring was redone in the proper cloth backed loom.

IMG_0825.

Manifold side. Proper carburetor.

IMG_0824.

The Packard 356 was famous for a reason – it made lots of power, lots of torque, and was – and is – extremely smooth in operation.

IMG_0789.

A perfect car for tours and events!

This 1934 Packard Twelve 1107 Victoria Coupe is the rare combination of excellent original and preservation, but with excellent mechanical condition and a driving experience that reminds me of what it must have been like to drive a new Packard Twelve! Offered by the Vault Classic Cars dealership, 714-401-1047.

IMG_0170.

The body style is extremely rare and attractive

IMG_0151.

The proportion and balance of the design is evident – the 142 inch wheelbase allows for a beautiful long hood, bodywork that occupies the middle of the chassis, and the rearmounted spare makes a long car look even longer!  Also note the unusual wood spoke artillery wheels.

IMG_0146.

A close look at the front bumper reveals the shock absorbing vibration dampers at each end – there is  system of weights and coil springs inside, which helps keep the car smooth and stable. Advanced engineering like this was what caused the original price of the car to be so high.

IMG_0149.

Another great touch – the headlights match the grille, both in outline and in the Vee contour of the lens!

IMG_0167.

The doors fit beautifully, the body structure is in excellent condition.

IMG_0169.

Beautiful from every angle.

IMG_0162.

What a beautiful car!

IMG_0179.

The interior is amazing – original wool broadcloth in excellent condition! Truly well preserved!

IMG_0181.

It is amazing to see the interior in such great shape

IMG_0182.

Gorgeous dashboard.  Note the radio head in the center, with it’s own key!  Off to the left is the brake control knob, which adjusts the force of the vacuum boosted brakes.

IMG_0184.

Excellent original rear compartment and headliner

IMG_0185.

I can’t believe how well this interior has survived!

IMG_0187.

When this car was new, men wore hats when they went outside. It was an essential item in the well dressed Packard owner’s wardrobe! So, Packard thoughtfully added this hat clip in the headliner of the car!

IMG_0171.

The magnificent Packard Twelve engine of 1934!  Correct engine number, and it runs exactly as it should. Smooth, quiet, powerful. Everything a Packard Twelve should be.  It also runs nice and cool, an important quality for a Packard Twelve.

IMG_0172.

The Packard Twelve engine was 445 cubic inches in 1934.

IMG_0174.

Proper carburetor, the Stromberg EE3 dual throat downdraft. Distributor with wire shield, and correct coils.

IMG_0176.

Correct finishes and colors.  Note the vent on the generator, and the vacuum activated Bijur chassis lubricator.

IMG_0178.

I can’t emphasize enough how nicely this car runs.  Wow!

IMG_0189.

This car won the AACA trophy for Historical Preservation of Original Features.

IMG_0156.

The car is known to have been repainted in around 1959.  The paint is older, and has some flaws.

IMG_0167.

A great, great car !

This 1933 Packard 1001 Coupe is beautifully restored, a Classic Car Club of America CCCA  first place and Senior badge winner!  It’s equipped with the 320 Cubic inch straight eight engine, easy shifting Synchro-mesh 3 speed transmission, four wheel power assisted mechanical brakes, adjustable ride control, Goddess of speed mascot, Dual Pilot Rays, Dual Packard Spotlights,  and rear mounted spare to highlight the length of the hood!

IMG_8455.

Beautiful in deep Packard Blue with straw double pinstripes and wire wheels!

IMG_8463.

The Best Packard Styling Ever! ’33 was a high point in that great company’s great history!

IMG_8461.

It couldn’t be any more beautiful!

IMG_8466.

The Rumbleseat is a great feature!

IMG_8497.

The rumbleseat makes this car a true crowd pleaser!

IMG_8458.

Note the chrome radiator shutters – closed when the car is cold in the morning.  Also note the dual pilot rays

IMG_8474.

And here are the thermostatic shutters after a drive, open for maximum airflow to the radiator.

IMG_8475.

While we’re here in front, look at those double whitewalls!  Wow!

IMG_8473.

Pilot rays are great!

IMG_8469.

Absolutely beautiful!

IMG_8500.

The leather interior beckons!

IMG_8484.

Just like it was at the Packard Showroom in 1933!

IMG_8487.

That dashboard is exactly right, with the herringbone pattern and crisp, clear gauges.

IMG_8486.

Properly trimmed rear window, with pull down shade and also note the knob- that’s to roll down the rear window so you can communicate with the rumbleseat passengers!

IMG_8485.

That Leather is buttery smooth and soft.

IMG_8494.

Lovely woodgraining

IMG_8498.

Beautiful step plate with Packard logo.

IMG_8491.

Nicely trimmed headliner!  Everywhere you look on this car it’s properly done and beautiful!

IMG_8508.

320 Cubic inch straight 8 – looks and runs great!

IMG_8502.

Very pretty and correct. Note the Bijur tank – by ’33 it was vacuum operated.

IMG_8509.

Nice porcelain on the manifolds, with only the slightest flaws.

IMG_8511.

Clean underneath too!  This car has had some road use on CARAVANs, but still very good underneath.

IMG_8471.

Wow!

IMG_8460.

Absolutely delightful!

We’re looking at a  beautiful 1948 Packard Station Sedan,  finished in Packard Maroon! I think Packard said it best in their original  sales catalog: “Here’s the “All-Occasion” beauty and comfort of a sedan, all the traditional utility of a station wagon . . . along with new strength, streamlining and proud distinction”.  To gain new durability, safety, and a lastingly quiet ride … Packard Stylists and engineers insisted on steel for the floor, the roof, and the wall structure. They selected fine-grained hardwoods for the side and rear panels, and specified new types of hardware and other fittings to carry out the massive distinction of its functional styling”  !

IMG_7633.

Packard’s immediate Post-War entry into the station wagon market combined sleek new sheetmetal with the rich, warm look of varnished hardwood!

IMG_7639.

beautifully painted in Packard Maroon, with acres of beautiful chrome and a forest of original, refinished wood! It’s a trophy winner, too, achieving the Packard Club “Circle of Champions” with 227.5 points of a possible 250 in 2002.

IMG_7641.

This car is nicely equipped with original 288 Cubic inch straight eight engine, Three speed manual transmission with factory overdrive, radio, heater and defroster.  And of course the new for ’48 Cormorant mascot and bumper overriders.

IMG_7682.

The car looks just like the Illustration in the Packard Catalog!

.

IMG_7643.

Beautiful in profile

IMG_7646.

The two piece rear hatch is a work of functional art, with a complex system of hinges and braces to keep it in place. And, it’s engineered to drive with the rear hatch open, the license light and bracket are hinged to allow the plate to show with the hatch open.

IMG_7678.

There’s the license plate and lamp in the “down” position!  Here’s Packard’s description of the cargo area: “Packard ingenuity provides extra length loading space. The rear seat folds forward,  adding two feet to the length of the cargo platform.  The lower rear door, when used as an extension of the cargo platform, brings its total length to nearly nine feet”

IMG_7648.

Absolutely beautiful!

IMG_7652.

Lovely!

IMG_7654.

Beautiful original refinished wood

IMG_7655.

Beauty and character show here.

IMG_7656.

Wow!

IMG_7657.

Wooden car enthusiasts love it when the original beams survive!

IMG_7666.

Beautifully done interior!  Let’s hear what Packard had to say: ” The Station sedan has an “inside Story” all its own. The broad, three passenger seats are upholstered in new materials that out-look and out-last natural leather. The roomy cargo compartment is finished in heavy plywood, with Stainless Steel “no-mar” strips”.

IMG_7667.

Rubber floormats were the standard issue for the Station Sedan

IMG_7669.

Excellent dashboard and woodgraining

IMG_7673.

Excellent condition and authentic materials

IMG_7683.

Looks just like it’s supposed to!

.

IMG_7668.

Excellent and correct

IMG_7670.

Beautiful Steering wheel

IMG_7660.

The heart of the wooden beast, a 288 cubic inch, 130 horsepower straight 8 Packard engine! Nicely detailed in the correct Packard Grey engine color. ’48 was the first year for grey engines.

IMG_7664.

Nice, clean, stock and authentic.

IMG_7659.

IMG_7676.

Here we can see the tailgate support mechanism that keeps it level when it’s open.

1948 Packard Station Sedan – Excellent condition, Trophy winner, Original wood! a Lovely car with straight 8 engine and factory overdrive!  SOLD

This 1942 Packard is the barn find of all barn finds – still in the hands of the original farming family, photos and family history to accompany the car, and best of all, stored indoors – literally, in the barn – and carefully maintained.  It still carries almost all of its original paint,  its original interior, and original engine and all of its 1942 specific components like the 1 year only hubcaps and side grilles.

42Packardphoto4.

There is Meyer Ponteprino to our  left, the original owner of the car, on the family driveway in Placentia, California. Next to him is his sister Perina and his brother Henry.  This must have been very close to the time Meyer sold the car to Henry, since Meyer was going in the service.  This is the very driveway we drove the car from just a little while ago! Their Parents came over from Italy in the first part of the 20th century, and put down roots in agricultural Orange County, CA.  They built this farmhouse and barn around 1927,  and had extensive avocado groves.  Today the surrounding area is all industrial buildings, a freeway, and homes, but back then it was all open space and groves.  It’s hard to imagine how much change that farmhouse saw over the last 89 years!

42Packardphoto1.

The new 1942 Packard in the driveway of the Ponteprino family farmhouse. The Ponteprinos were very successful avocado farmers, and Meyer Ponteprino even got a U.S. Plant Patent # 1,080 for “A new and distinctive variety of Avocado tree” on March 25, 1952.

Meyer lived until the mid 1980’s, and his brother, Henry Ponteprino, owned the Packard until his recent passing.  Henry continued to keep the car safe and indoors,  and he kept the maintenance work up on it.  Within the last couple of years, he had the car serviced with new brakes and coolant hoses, and restored gas tank, among other things.

IMG_5626.

So when we were introduced to the car, it looked like this – dusty and dirty, but it was under a dry roof and had a cover.  Closer inspection revealed original paint.  Because of the obvious service work that had been done, we thought it might wake up and live!

And Live it did!

Here’s Betty Ponteprino in the car she drove as a young woman!

IMG_5602.

What a find! It’s not too often you see a car undisturbed by the ages, yet carefully preserved and still in amazingly good condition!

IMG_5628.

I really liked the initials on the door – M E P – Meyer E. Ponteprino!

IMG_5815.

As you saw in the video, the car woke up very nicely, with just gasoline and a battery, and ran and drove the 2 miles from the farmhouse to the showroom!  And it ran and drove sweetly too, with good power from the engine, smooth clutch operation,  and nice brakes.  It was a joy to fire that car up and put it on the road for the first time in a very long time!

IMG_5820.

Amazing.  As befits a California car, the sheetmetal is beautiful, solid and rust free as can be!

IMG_5817.

The fender side grilles changed from vertical to horizontal in the abbreviated 1942 model year, which ran from August 25, 1941 to February 7, 1942.  Only 11,325 of the ’42 110  cars were made of ALL body styles, making this a very rare car indeed.  This car is a Model 2020 , type 1589 “Coupe-Convertible”  with 122″ wheelbase.  We’ll see the number 1589 below  in the photo of the original factory data plate on the cowl.

IMG_5835.

That’s the factory original data plate.

IMG_5821.

The Fenderskirts are a terrific factory accessory!

IMG_5823.

Great lines on this car!

IMG_5827.

This car is just a sweetie – even the headlights still work!

IMG_5830.

Notice the working license light, and tail lights.  And that 1973 DMV sticker on the black license plate. The black plate  would have been issued in 1963, that’s when the Black / Gold plate was introduced.

IMG_5829.

And there are both tail lights bright and working!

IMG_5832.

There’s the rare ’42 only Hubcap – with the same dual groove edge we saw in ’47 through ’50, but with a different Packard logo / hexagon center.

IMG_5848.

Not sure of the age of the tires, but they look like they have hardly any miles!

IMG_5844.

That’s the actual original interior, with correct pattern and double stitching. Sure it’s got some splits and cracks, but it’s amazingly good. The new owner might choose to have it conserved with a fabric backing to prevent further splitting.

IMG_5839.

The dashboard is remarkably nice, as is the rare and desirable Packard Deluxe Steering wheel!  The family told me Henry bought the steering wheel not terribly long ago.

IMG_5842.

Dashboard, gauges and plastic are remarkably nice!  All of the instruments work except for the gasoline gauge.  The 69,142 miles showing are believed to be the original miles.

IMG_5840.

The ashtray and ashtray surround plastic shows some drying, but still amazing for originals.  the radio push knobs are deteriorated.

IMG_5843.

Original and amazingly good!

IMG_5845.

The rear seat, all original, with added seat belts.

IMG_5847.

The originality of this car is breathtaking.

IMG_5852.

Here’s the trunk – with agricultural canvas bags protecting it.  Notice the brand new in the bag 1942 Packard Hubcap tucked in back – it’s a little bit pitted, but I loved the idea that Meyer wanted to make sure he always had a spare hubcap!

IMG_5836.

There’s the Packard six cylinder engine, with correct for 1942 “E” prefix on the engine serial number.

IMG_5862.

There’s the right side of the engine, with proper air cleaner, new coolant hose, and, another cylindrical thing, let’s take a look.

IMG_5864.

It’s a “Luber-Finer”, an aftermarket oil filter.  One so large it looks like it might be for a truck!

IMG_5868.

It’s a great engine – it’s smooth, it is very quiet, fires right up, and runs great!

IMG_5859.

It looks to me like there was some body repair on the right rear section, you can see evidence of it to the left of the tail light.

IMG_5860.

the right front fender also looks like it was spotted in.

IMG_5855.

Jack stand, jack and tools. Note the instructional pictures on the tag.

IMG_5935.

Let’s take a look at the undercarriage, extremely solid and original, as a southern California car since new should be! The only rust I could find was on the battery carrier. Otherwise, it’s all original, solid, and un-rusted sheetmetal. Also note the presence of the engine bay splash pans, which often don’t survive.

IMG_5928.

Looking at the reconditioned gas tank, with original solid sheetmetal just behind it. Amazingly good!

IMG_5931.

Recent brake hoses and wheel cylinders.

IMG_5939.

Super solid and original frame – and look how nice the runningboard sheetmetal is !

IMG_5929.

And the often-missing inner  rear fender spray deflector!

IMG_5820.

A tremendous find, worthy of continued preservation!

1933 Packard Victoria Convertible - Fresh from lengthy storage, runs, drives, good solid, authentic car! Photos shortly!

1933 Packard Dietrich 1002 Victoria Convertible – Fresh from lengthy storage, runs, drives, good solid, authentic complete car! SOLD.

.

.

This 1932 Packard 902 is a great survivor, brought back to life by a local Classic Car enthusiast. It runs, it will move under it’s own power, and it’s a real, authentic 1932 Packard Sedan, a Full CCCA Classic. It will need restoration, but it’s a fundamentally good car, with solid body wood, doors that fit and close well, and correct original engine and chassis numbers that match the car.

.

Current plates and clean California Title!  This car has disc wheels , a Fred Mauck Adonis hood ornament, and good chrome plating.

.

Still some shine to the paint, but let’s not kid around, it should be painted to look good. The body structure and wood is good, the doors all hang well and close properly, and there would only be minimal bodywork necessary to make it really nice.

.

The Roof insert is very recent and is very nicely and correctly done.

.

Nice chrome plating.  Obviously not perfect show chrome, but pretty nice.

.

Another view of the grille-hood area.

.

These might be the original tires – they show lots of age and cracks, and should be replaced at once.

.

I like the rearmounted spare, which allows the full sweep of the front fender to show.

.

Nice chrome on the rear bumper, note the separate piece to protect the spare.

.

Decent looking interior, done in grey striped synthetic fabric.  That’s an original ’32 Steering wheel, and the correct dash and gauges.

.

Decent interior.

.

Here’s the doorpanel.  Note the windows roll up and down like they should and the glass is in good shape, although the windshield has some de-lamination.

.

Correct gauges. The oil pressure gauge and the ammeter are hooked up and working.  However the rest of the gauges are not hooked up and will require more work to be operational.

.

Good original correct steering wheel.  I love the Art Deco style spokes!  It’s got some cracks but is totally restorable or just use it as-is.

.

Decent looking rear compartment, with the same striped gray material throughout.

.

Nice flower vase for the rear passengers.

.

Nice!

.

Another view of the rear seat.

.

Here’s the 320 cubic inch straight 8, with the 1932 features – Fuel pump, multi-piece intake & exhaust manifold, and correct detroit Lubricator carburetor.

.

The valves were recently redone, hence the nice Packard green paint on the cylinder head.

.

It runs, but there is a tapping noise which we believe is a bad rocker arm.  So, it’s good enough to move around, but not good enough to take a tour.

.

Here’s the water jacket side. The engine is a 347 number, which is right in the middle of 1932 Packard Standard Eight engine numbers.

.

Here’s the original firewall tag.  543 means 902 Sedan on the 136.5 inch wheelbase,  and 300 is the sequential build number.

.

Note the original oil level gauge, and headlight switch at the bottom of the steering column.

.

A good old car that just needs some love. For example, you can see some delamination on the windshield glass in this phot0.

.

Great profile!

.

Classic Lines!

.

It’s a good car, it’s a rare car, and it’s a ’32 Packard, which has the magic V-radiator, big headlight and sweeping fender styling.  A car worthy of doing the additional work required to restore it!

This 1941 Packard 160 Convertible Coupe is  offered by the Vault Classic Cars Dealership.

.

It is a beautifully restored car and a multiple national trophy winner !

.

Deep Packard Maroon paint on arrow straight bodywork. This car got all those trophies for a reason!

.

Beautiful Chrome plating throughout.

.

Great from any angle !

.

This shot shows the high quality of the plating and the paint!

.

One of the Dual Packard Spotlights!

.

Beautiful Cloisonne Emblem with Packard Crest adorns the hood sides, just ahead of the hidden hood latch.

.

Note the fenderskirts that match the contour of the fender, correct and authentic.

.

Dual Backup lights and pretty taillights. More beautiful Chrome.

.

The extremely rare and desirable deLuxe Steering wheel, restored beautifully.

.

Beautiful instruments, all of which work properly, including the “Aero Drive” indicator light just below the “11”  in the speedometer.

.

The dashboard in all it’s trophy winning glory.

.

Seats beautifully and correctly done in leather.  Wool carpeting for the floor!

.

Doorpanel beautifully done in leather.  Also note the vent window crank – that’s a feature of the 160 convertible, and a way to tell it apart from the cheaper 120 model.

.

Nicely finished glovebox!

.

Packard Radio with correct knobs.

.

Heater and defroster controls.  Nice in the original plastic!

.

Nicely done underneath the dashboard too!

.

Let’s not forget the rear compartment !

.

CCCA first place and CCCA Senior badge.  Well earned.

.

356 Cubic Inch straight 8, runs great and detailed properly.

.

correct finishes and colors.

.

Even the underside of the hood is finished nicely.

.

Another feature of the senior Packards in ’41 was the thermostatically controlled grille shutters.  Here we can see the thermostat mounted to the front of the radiator.

.

Nicely done correct wiring harness.

.

Clean and sharp.

.

Note the straight body and reflections in the paint.

.

Lovely !

.

Wow!

1936 Packard Streetrod – Professionally built to the HIGHEST Standard – injected 454, overdrive Automatic trans, 4 wheel disc brakes, Air Conditioning, power steering, Hidden Stereo, and more! Looks stock on the outside but it’s all new underneath! CLICK THE PHOTO FOR MORE DETAIL AND A VIDEO

.

This 1932 Packard 901 is a beautiful and fun CCCA Full Classic, engine rebuilt with receipts, a great looking and great driving car, offered by the Vault Classic Cars dealership.

.

Packard really got it right in 1932 – the first year for the V shaped radiator, and clash-free synchro-mesh transmission! And, the final year for the beautiful sweeping open front fender.

.

I love the wire wheels and sidemounts with Bedford Cord 700X19 wide whitewalls

.

Driving this car is really a pleasure – the engine was rebuilt in 1998, there are extensive receipts in the file to show it, and it just runs great. It fires up every time easily, it drives down the road beautifully – with no axle tramp or shimmy – and can easily handle freeway speeds of 60 MPH – yes, I have driven it on the freeway myself, and enjoyed the experience!

Here’s a Video of the car in Operation!

.

The epitome of Classic Styling.

.

Also note the goddess of speed hood ornament and sidemount mirrors.

.

Excellent chrome plating, and those horns work, too ! As do the headlamps !

.

Tastefully pinstriped in blue to accent the Packard Blue body color.

.

Excellent dashboard and beautifully restored steering wheel.

.

Nice ! All of the instruments work except the clock and gas guage.

.

The interior is nicely done in a very light blue-gray, using a modern fabric.  The patterns and stitching are nicely and correctly done.

.

Correct sunvisors.

.

Rear compartment nicely finished, and look at all that legroom!

.

Excellent doorpanels and handles.

.

Nicely done robe rail in wood and chrome.

.

Nice bevelled glass sidemount mirrors – they actually are nice and tight, they don’t vibrate, and actually give the driver a good view of what’s behind the car!

.

Here’s the 320 cubic inch straight 8, rebuilt in 1998, and runs beautifully!  It’s the correct engine for the car, the engine number is right for 1932. The car is titled to the engine number.

.

That’s the original firewall tag.

.

This shot shows the bijur lubricator, as well as the wiring, which was redone to modern standards. Of course the car is still a 6 Volt positive ground system, just like factory.

.

Here’s a nice surprise – The Packard company offered a retro-fit for 1932 Packards to use the later 2 barrel downdraft carburetor after it was introduced in 1933.  So, this car has the slightly more modern factory upgrade, which makes a lot more power than the original detroit lubricator single throat updraft.

.

1932 also had a factory fuel pump, and improvement over the old vacuum tank system.  This car also has a hidden electric pump keyed to the ignition switch. No vaporlocking here!

.

Nice Binder with Restoration receipts. Most of it done in the early 1980’s, and then the engine in 1998.

.

Here’s the work order for the Engine Rebuild.

.

.

Nice leather trunk.

.

I like the trunk nameplate, a real original touch.

.

another view of the trunk.  This would make a great tour car, with plenty of luggage space.

.

the 32 Packard was restored in 1983, and painted in lacquer.  There are some spots on the car that show checking or spot in, like this corner of the front fender.

.

Although the paint does show some age and checking, it’s still holding up pretty well, it’s shiny, and people who see the car on the road think it’s great!  It’s not going to win a show trophy anymore, but you could exhibit the car and it’s still pretty and nice!  And, unlike some of the trophy hound cars, you’ll be able to drive it to the show and back!

.

The right rear fender shows some checking and paint cracks.

.

It’s styling like this that makes the ’32 Packard an especially good year!

.

A great example of the ’32 Packard!

.

That’s a great looking car!

.

Pretty from any angle !

.

Stylish and tasteful, the best that 1932 had to offer!

It looks stock from the oustide, but it has been comprehensively upgraded to a modern driving experience. And the work was done to the highest possible standards! Show Quality throughout!

.

Those whitewalls are radial 16 inch tires.  They look right but they feel modern!

.

and it comes with matching trailer!

Here’s a video of the car in operation!

.

Absolutely beautiful! The paint is wonderful, a deep, smooth metallic gold color done in Spies Hecker acrylic enamel. the paint looks like brand new, it’s absolutely beautiful!

.

Spectacular fit and finish!  Note the Goddess of Speed hood ornament!

.

Look how low the windshield is – it’s not chopped, that’s the factory look!  It’s cool without taking out the sawz-all !

.

Classic Profile, and the highest possible build quality!

.

Gorgeous – all of the chrome is beautiful.

.

Not only is it beautiful inside, but the quality and level of detail is amazing! We have a Tilt steering wheel, we have a clean dashboard that manages to incorporate all of the controls in a stock appearing way, we have air conditioning vents just below the dashboard, and total color co-ordination throughout. We also have stock window cranks that operate the power windows by just a push up or down!

.

The seat material is just like original, high quality striped wool.  Also note the seatbelts.

.

AM/FM CD player, cleverly concealed!  Again, nothing to interfere with the clean dashboard!

.

Gorgeous!

.

Look at those gauges!  And of course they all work properly.  The mileage of course isn’t the original mileage, but we think it’s the mileage since the restification was done.

.

Comfortable back seat with plenty of legroom!  Also note the details like the A/C vents just aft of the pull strap, and seatbelts.

.

Note the courtesy lights!  Everywhere you look on this car there is a well done feature or detail.

.

Beautiful headlining, also note the courtesy light working!

.

Incredibly nice woodwork and woodgraining!  and, notice the slotted oval screws – they didn’t have Phillips head screws until the early 1940’s, so I like this ultimate level attention to detail!  This is the type of thing we look for in concours judging !

.

Nice!

.

Power seat control!

.

Twice as big as the original engine, this Chevy 454 is beautiful, it runs great, has throttle body fuel injection,  and those great Packard script valvecovers!

.

Wow! Attention to detail everywhere!

.

Here on the right side we have the A/C compressor, a modern system with modern R-134 refrigerant.

.

Beautiful!

.

Incredibly clean underneath, note the color coding of the engine and frame.

.

Torsion bar suspension, and rack and pinion power steering.  And look how clean it is !

.

4 Wheel power disc brakes!

.

Stainless gas tank, and big Ford 9″ rear axle.

.

The “Packard” is actually a removable cover that allows you to fit the trailer hitch!  Again, the attention to detail and style on this car is comprehensive!

.

And the front of the trailer.  The trailer inside is beautifully carpeted in the same material as the car!

.

Astonishingly nice !

The 1941 Packard 160 Coupe.  This was Packard’s very lightweight senior car –  only the Duesenberg has a higher power-to-weight ratio in the pre-war Classic Era !  And as you might expect with 160 horsepower and factory overdrive, this car is perfectly suited for both highway touring and the concours show field, having already achieved CCCA senior status.  It also has a distinguished chain of ownership, including Lowell Sorenson from Minnesota, and Bill Lauer from California.

.

This beautiful car has a number of styling advancements that foreshadow the post-war era, such as headlights in the fenders and speed lines on the fenders, and chrome window reveals.   And the Chassis !  This car has a very modern driving feel, with independent front suspension, hydraulic brakes, factory overdrive,  and all that 356 cubic inch straight eight power !

.

It’s  lovely dark Packard Blue, with correct  grey whipcord interior.

.

.

This car is especially beautiful in a darker color, the chrome and stainless – which are fresh looking and beautiful – really accent the design.  Note how the chrome spear goes from the forward edge of the hood all the way back around the lower edge of the roof. Brilliant!

.

I like this photo because it shows how straight and beautiful the bodywork is – look at the reflection on the door, and the fender.  Wow!

.

Lovely chrome plating, and I really like the bumperguards.

.

Classic Car Club of America First Prize winner, and then Senior Badge too !  Wear it with pride !

.

Here are the thermostatically controlled grille shutters – a Packard Senior car feature, the 120’s had fixed grilles.  And look how nice the chrome plating is, it’s gorgeous !

.

By ’41, Packard, along with most of the rest of the auto industry, had gone to sealed beam headlights.  These headlights are correct 6 volt units without the “alighment lugs”  or bumps that most replacement 6 volt lights have.  That shows a dedication to keeping the car correct.

.

A beautiful and inviting interior, done in the correct grey whipcord.

.

Excellent doorpanel, and note the doorhandle escutcheons in plastic.

.

Also note the excellent finish on the window surround.

.

Beautifully restored steering wheel, and brilliant woodgraining on the dash.  All of the plastic in the dash and knobs looks like they are new.  Note the heater switches, this car has factory heater / defroster!

.

Beautiful !  All of the gauges and instruments work, and the radio works on the stronger stations.  This car is so nice I really have to reach for faults, but I noted some minor crazing at the edges of the clear portion of the instrument panel. The horn emblem has a bit of fading, too.

.

Gorgeous !

.

Excellent headliner and sunvisors

.

One more view of the spectacular interior!

.

clean engine bay,  note the correctly done wiring harness.

.

It runs as a 356 cubic inch Packard should – hitting on all eight cylinders, smooth, and powerful.  Recent service work includes a new clutch,  rebuilt generator, new voltage regulator and fan belt.  The mechanical fuel pump works properly, and can be assisted by the Carter Vane style electric pump that is mounted un-obtrusively.

.

That’s the original Data plate mounted to the cowl.

.

The roof mounted antenna is a great feature!

.

And so is the goddess of speed !

.

Nice clean trunk area, lined with carpeting.

.

And nice solid original sheetmetal underneath.

.

And nicely finished underneath the trunklid.

.

Spectacular! Fast! Beautiful! Ready for show or tour!

It has only had 7 owners since new.    And we see it here now, well preserved and out and running nicely on a club tour!

The 1936 Packard Super 8 model 1405 is the epitome of luxurious classic touring and styling!  The powerful Super 8 Engine, of 385 cubic inches, has been freshly and professionally rebuilt, and it runs with power and smoothness.  ’36 was the final year for wire wheels, for the optional weighted bumpers, and power assisted mechanical brakes. And, this car is exceptionally rare, with only 3 believed to have survived based on research on file from Jim Pearsall, the Packard Historian.

.

The oval badge on the cowl is the AACA Historic preservation of Features award – the AACA’s way of honoring a car that is largely original .  ’36 was the first year for the dramatically angled grille, which gave a more streamlined look.

.

there it is with the front door open, inviting us inside.  The seats were re-upholstered sometime in the 1980’s, although the doorpanels are still the originals.

.

Here’s the newly rebuilt Super 8 engine, 385 cubic inches, with the correct 1936 engine number !

.

Nicely finished engine ! Note the porcelain and the brand new reproduction cylinder head.

.

In addition to the engine, the owner and former owner have attended to a number of operation things that make this car a pleasure to drive, such as a new radiator core, new wiring harness, rebuilt brake booster  and a new top , all done in the 1990’s.

.

.

Original dashboard in excellent condition ! Note the radio and heater . We think it’s the original carpet, too !   Nice Packard emblem on the Steering wheel.  The Radio, which is shown in this photo, is out of the car  right now, the new owner would have to re-install the radio.

This 1937 Packard Twelve Roadster is the best of the best !  A car that has had only two owners since the 1950’s !  A known authentic Packard Twelve Roadster, with original body tag and a very recent restoration, accompanied by significant trophies ! CCCA First, Senior and Premier,  and AACA National First Place in 2009 !

.

This car was, for many, many years, the property of Bob Hance of Southern California.  He owned it from the late 1950’s until 2005 !  At that point, the next owner purchased it from Bob, and undertook a thorough, professional restoration, documented by photo journal and extensive receipts!

It’s a Stunning car in every way – let’s start with the factory specifications – 473 Cubic inch V-12, 175 Horsepower,  139 inch wheelbase,  Independent front suspension, Hydraulic brakes, Dual sidemounts, and vacuum power boosters for both brake and clutch.  The ’37 Packard Twelve is, in my opinion, the nicest driving Classic ever made.  A bold statement, but I invite to to disprove it!  And this particular car runs and drives exactly as it should!

It’s a beautifully restored car!  Note the proper pinstriping, the lovely cloisonne hubcap emblems, and Sidemount mirrors!

175 Horsepower, the smoothest and quietest engine ever !

.

Very clean underneath, especially when you consider the car has had a 900 mile CARAVAN since restoration!

.

Correct splash pans, and a good view of the independent front suspension.

.

Extensive receipts and documentation on this car.

.

And a wonderful photo album showing the restoration!

.

If you look really closely at this headlamp lens, it says “Left”.  The other one says “Right”.  They are of course correct glass originals.

.

Lovely, fresh chrome plating – and, there’s a lot of chrome on this car!  If I were to pick a fault, the driver’s side trippe light reflector is a little dark,  and there are some touched up chips near the edge of the golf bag door.

.

And here it is with the rumbleseat open!

.

Another accessory – the trunk rack bumper – you can see it on the top of the trunk rack. It would, theoretically, keep the trunk rack and trunk from being damaged if someone hit you when the trunk rack was down.  I’d like to keep that idea theoretical ! In this view you can also see both rumbleseat steps.

.

Multi-Cylinder – Known authentic and original – the apex of Classic Design – a near-modern driving experience, with power hydraulic brakes, power clutch,  175 Horsepower V-12 – Freeway capable.  The best the Classic era could offer!

1940 Packard 180 Club Sedan model 1806. Excellent tour car with substantial recent maintenance. Extremely Rare top of the line 1940 Packard. SOLD.

1947 Packard Custom 8 model 2106-2122. Top of the line Full CCCA Classic. Known good history, careful and loving owners since 1968. Super documentation. excellent condition, great accessories. SOLD.

This 1947 Packard Custom Super 8 Touring Sedan was sold new by Ostendorf Motors in Buffalo, New York, to a family from Santa Barbara, CA.  There were 2 brothers, and they each bought a ’47 Packard custom 8, when their military service ended, and then drove them home to Santa Barbara, where both cars lived until 1968. Well known Collector Bob Davies bought them both from the family in ’68.   This car was by far the nicer of the two, at the time still having original paint in Vermont Green and Vanderbilt Grey.  Bob was a careful and knowledgeable owner, and he kept the car in excellent shape, and took it to tours and shows.  I remember the car from the 1985 January Packard meet in Anaheim, where I parked across the show aisle with my own ’47 Custom 8 that I had just finished restoring.  This has always been a nice car, and has had excellent care from it’s owners.  After Bob’s passing it went to Bob Brelsford in 1998, and then to Max Fields in Arizona. I bought it from Max in 2012, and sold it to the current owner.  It has successfully completed many national tours and CCCA CAR-A-VANs,  most recently the Idaho Sun Valley caravan and the Utah – California leg of the 2013 Coast To Coast “Rediscover America” CAR-A-VAN.

.

Additional accessories on this car include the Deluxe steering wheel – the “Banjo” or “K” steering wheel – and the roof mounted antenna, goddess of speed hood ornament, and rear bumperguard.

.

The 2 tone in Vermont Green and Vanderbilt grey makes an attractive design even better.  Of course this is the factory 2-tone paint scheme.

.

The paint was redone under Bob Brelsford’s ownership sometime after 1998, as was the wiring harness.  It’s a beautiful, high quality paint job in the proper colors, with only the slightest signs of touring and use.

.

Straight.  Smooth. Rust Free.  Only 1 paint job in the last 67 years !  Note the excellent radial whitewalls, perfect for touring.

.

Excellent original chrome up front, with only some blushing on the bumpers and very , very minor pitting on the die cast grille pieces, which I think are the original ones.

.

Excellent !

.

Super in profile!  actually, Custom Super!!  Note the beautiful hubcap emblems.

.

Absolutely lovely.  Ready to go on tour now.  The Brakes were completely redone in 2012 with receipts to match.  In fact, there are work receipts going back to 1970,  including an engine rebuild in 1991.

.

The full repair history back to 1970 as documented by receipts.

.

California Registrations back to 1968.

.

Let’s take a look inside the beautiful interior!  ALL original with the exception of the front seat cushion, which was redone with the correct Bill Hirsh broadcloth during Bob Brelsford’s ownership. That is the original, impossible to re-create and excellent Moss-Tred Carpeting, which was a very thick wool cut pile carpet with no edging – instead, it was wrapped around and bound to a rubberized backing underneath.

.

All original and beautiful back here.

.

Here’s a better view of the woodgrained accent bar and robe rail.

.

Beautiful original doorpanels and woodgraining.  Of course the top of the window sill shows the effects of touring and elbows resting on the open window.

.

Pretty – and original – dashboard. Note the chrome steering column and parking brake, a hallmark of the Custom Super.  The less expensive Packards had tan steering columns.

.

The Deluxe Steering wheel, original to the car and still in excellent shape, with only some very minor cracking at the very top of the wheel.  This is a super rare and desirable acessory!

.

The mileage is not original, the speedometer is known to have been changed.  We know this because it’s noted in this book that details the service life and history of the car – inscribed in by Bob Davies, Bob Brelsford, Max Fields and the current owner.

.

We also know, based on this entry and the receipt file that the 356 Cubic Inch engine was replaced in 1983 because of a crack.  The new engine is a G5 stamped engine, meaning it is a 356 Cubic inch engine from a 1948 Packard. Those engines are identical except for the serial number.   That engine was rebuilt again in 1991, and continues to give good service today!

.

Here’s the engine itself. 356 Cubic inches, straight 8, smooth as glass and powerful as a locomotive.

.

The mighty powerplant has successfully completed many tours. Your tour could be the next one!

.

A great running car!  It shows great oil pressure, it runs nice and cool, it has all the power it is supposed to, and it keeps up with high speed interstate traffic effortlessly.  My only comment to make on the operation is that, when warm, the car has a lifter tick and a very slight whine in second gear.   A brand new hydraulic lifter is included with the car.

.

Excellent clean trunk with spare and spare-only hubcap.

It even has the original trunk matting in excellent shape.

.

Nice.

.

Here are some photos of tours and events this car participated in.  It’s been well travelled and well cared for. A big box of photos, magazine articles, receipts, old registrations and history on the car is included in the sale.

.

Delightful!

.

I love it!

.

Beautiful chrome and accessory bumper guard.

.

Here’s the roof antenna and the glare proof mirror

.

Owner’s manual, and delivery tags for the mirror, rotary antenna and clock.

.

The Front to Back headliner, another hallmark of the Custom Super 8.

.

Another Custom Super 8 feature were these stainless bands and leather wrap at the seat base.

.

beautiful ashtray with gold Packard lettering and cat-eye lighter.

.

A beautiful car ready for CCCA and other Club tours and Events!

The 1934 Packard 1107 V-12 Club Sedan was the epitome of the luxurious closed car in 1934.  A short-coupled design for 5 passengers, the balanced styling and blind rear quarter makes it the best looking Sedan of the Classic Era!

.

Beautiful.  Just beautiful.  Packard got the styling just right in 1934, with beautiful V radiator, V-shaped headlight lenses, and fins on the headlamps and parking lamps. The skirted fenders were a precursor of streamlining.  What a spectacular design!

.

This car has a good history all the way back to the 1960’s, when it was owned by a hobbyist in Pennsylvania.  Bob Turnquist’s shop did a sympathetic restoration, including engine rebuild and paint and chrome sometime in the 1960’s, and he sold it to the most recent California owner in 1971.  I remember this car from SoCal Region CCCA events and Grand Classics back into the 1970’s, including the 1977 Grand Classic in Santa Barbara, CA.

.

The Data plate is the original one issued by Packard and stamped by Packard Inc., Philadelphia PA. The engine number fits correctly in the 1934 Engine number sequence.  This car is listed in Ed Blend’s Book,  “the Magnificent Packard Twelve of 1934”.  This car is as real, and authentic, and original as it can be!

.

Here we see the radiator shutters, which work properly with the thermostatic actuator.  This car runs nice and cool, and it starts right up after it’s been driven, too! Also note the big, heavy, V-12 Vibration damping bumpers.

.

Look how straight the body is, and how nicely the doors fit.  Also note the dual pinstriping in the factory pattern.

.

More straight body panels, and a blue California license plate.  Nice!

.

Trunk rack and heavy V-12 bumper. The ’34 Club sedan had an integral trunk also.

.

The Packard Twelve had a special tail light with a blue center, which when Illuminated gave an orange / pink glow.  They were the original blue dots!  And, it was a subtle way of proclaiming that this car was better than everything else on the road!

.

Although the paint was done in the 1960’s,  there are some signs of age, cracks,  chips and the like.  It’s not a fresh paint job, but it was high quality when it was done.

.

The mighty Packard V-12. 445 Cubic inches. Tremendous. Unbelievably smooth and powerful.

.

An important feature on this car – Cast Iron cylinder heads.  Most Packard Twelves have Aluminum cylinder heads, which are victims of electrolytic corrosion.  This car has the super desirable cast iron heads.

.

Here’s the generator side.  Note the Purolator oil filter.  Also note the coils have been changed out for modern units.

.

In case anyone wondered what the reservoir with green fluid is, it’s been labeled with that plastic lettering that I haven’t seen since about 1975!

.

More important are these factory original stampings, that show the correct body type – 736 means V-12 Club Sedan 1107 – and 72 is the sequential production number of this body type.  Packard Inc Philadelphia had a nice method of stamping their dealer information, they must have had a fixture to do it. On this plate, the only hand stamping is the delivery date.

.

Let’s climb in to the unbelievably good original interior!  The fabric is still strong, and it has survived the years amazingly well.

.

Astonishingly good!

.

Excellent original doorpanel and wood window trim!

.

Wonderful rear compartment

.

Tremendous original seats!

.

Wonderful headlining also!

.

Sunvisors too!  Look at that wood windshield surround !

.

Pretty dash.

.

Excellent original dash and instruments. They work properly, too. It runs cool, and has good oil pressure – 30 to 45 PSI running warm, and 17 PSI at idle warm.  There is an intermittent valve lifter click / noise, but the car runs really nice and smooth.   the 14,000 miles showing has surely rolled over, we don’t claim that mileage as original.

.

How about that art deco Packard Heater?

.

Packard Model S-1 Safety light – otherwise known as a Spotlight!

.

And it works, too!

.

The Steering wheel emblem. Isn’t that nice?

.

The trunk liner has been decorated with dash plaques from many shows and events from long ago, and some shows that have gone on to the great lawn in the sky, like LeCercle, the Show Car Finals,  CHVA, and Movieworld Cars of Stars.

.

That door line shot is wonderful. These doors fit beautifully!

.

This is a delightful car with great history, authenticity and enjoyability!

Here is a beautifully restored 1938 Packard Super 8 Touring sedan, a full CCCA Classic, with extensive restoration work documented by receipts, and proven worthy by participation in several CCCA CAR-A-Vans!

It looks just right in Packard Blue with light blue pinstriping!  Note the diamondback whitewall radial tires!  Also note the Cormorant hood ornament, sidemounts, sidemount mirrors and trunk rack.

Delightful!  All of that chrome plating is in excellent condition!

I love those bullet shaped finned headlight shells,  the perfect late 1930’s streamlined theme.

Excellent sidemounts with the proper covers, stainless trim  and sidemount mirrors.

Nicely done top insert

Just exactly as it should be!

The interior is spectacular, and I would say almost flawless.  It is done in the proper wool broadcloth,  it has the proper 1938 pattern,  and it looks like it did when it sat in the Packard Dealer’s showroom.  That steering wheel is restored and beautiful, the dashboard looks like new.  It is amazingly nice in here!

Wow!  the ’38 / 39 Senior dashboard is a particular favorite of mine, I love how these instruments march along the chrome rails on the dash.  And, the gauges are in wonderful condition, and they work, too.  Also working are the dash lights when you turn on the headlights.

A beautiful Packard “Super Deluxe” heater.

And the Packard radio box and speaker.  I think the radio isn’t working right now.

Note the 1938 Only ribbed pattern on the sun visor clamps. That theme is carried through all the doorhandles and window cranks.

Here’s what I’m talking about on the door hardware, a unified design theme.

And the outside doorhandles too!

Rear compartment just like new.  I mean it, the interior quality and workmanship is extremely high.

Beautiful !

This engine has been completely – and expensively – and recently – rebuilt by people who know how, the craftsmen at Ronnie’s Garage.  They do the restoration work for several noted local collectors.  I have to say after viewing and operating this engine, their work product is of the first rank.  That engine is smooth, it idles down to some ridiculously low RPM, and has every single one of the 130 Horsepower that Packard originally intended.   All of the work receipts on this car are included, over $35,000 in recent mechanical work over the last 4 or 5 years.  I would take this car on tour without hesitation right now.

Excellent and correct finishes,  look how nice the porcelain is on the exhaust manifold!

More beautiful engine finish – note the proper hoseclamps, the right decals, and the correct wiring harness done during restoration.

Wow!

Here’s a better view of the manifold porcelain.

Beautiful – and brand new – radiator core.  Note the thermostatic shutter control, working as it should.

Headlights – and all the other lights – work great.

We haven’t seen the right side of the car yet, so here it is! Just as beautiful as the left side.

Lovely!

This photo shows a couple of things that need to be mentioned.  The paint shows a bit of age,  there is some checking and sand marks showing here and there.  and, some of the glass, being original, has delaminated a bit around the edges, you can see that in this photo.  There’s also a delaminated portion on the right side windshield.

1938 was a tough year for Packard identification numbers.  The factory responded to dealer complaints about having to remove, stamp, and re-install the firewall  data plates by coming up with an inkstamped sticker process that was supposed to be easier.  this process was one of Packard’s few bad ideas, and it only lasted for the 1938 Sixteenth series.  As the cars aged, the inkstampings became illegible.  Because of this issue, when this car came to California, it was issued a California assigned VIN # that you see here, the Car is titled to that number.

The receipt binder is nicely organized.

And nicely summarized!

Not only was the engine rebuilt, but it has been on tour afterwards,  so the work has been proven !

Ready for touring and enjoyment right now!

Here is a beautiful 1940 Packard 120 Club Sedan – a very rare and attractive bodystyle,  with excellent accessories and high quality work.  And, a car that can be driven on the freeway with it’s factory installed overdrive!

In profile we can see the beauty of the design.  Note the 2 chrome strips below the doors – this car has the runningboard delete option, which really makes the car look sleeker.

The paint is a very attractive dark green, done in laqcuer

That is a good looking car!  And it is a pleasure to drive, too.

Excellent chrome.  Note the optional triple bar bumperguards

Wow!

Let’s have a look at the beautiful interior!

This interior is spectacular – done in wool broadcloth, looking fresh and new.  The notes that came with this car say it was restored in 2005.  Look at that beautiful woodgrained dashboard, and the restored steering wheel!

Excellent doorpanels,  lovely and fresh woodgraining on the window surrounds, and correct, matching plastic bezels on the doorhandle & window crank.

Lovely instruments, all of which work.  Obviously, this mileage is not the original, we assume it has rolled over.

Wow!  Very rich looking, they did a beautiful job on this interior!  I noted both the radio and clock aren’t working.

Excellent re-done glovebox.

Excellent rear compartment.

Another view – look how nice the woodgraining is here.

Very nice indeed.

There’s the 282 Cubic inch Straight Eight Packard engine, nice and clean, and most importantly, running great!  This car really runs nice – starts right away, runs smooth, maintains 30 PSI oil pressure, and runs nice and cool at halfway on the temperature needle.  I bought this car and drove it home 70 miles  on the freeway during the L.A. rush hour,  and it handled that torture test with no problems at all!   At the end of the drive, I was very impressed with the car!

Here’s the driver’s side, showing the new and correct wiring harness, the overdrive relay, and the horns.  The overdrive works perfectly, as do the horns.

Nice!

A final view of the engine.

A really good looking car.

The paint is  nice lacquer, a high quality effort.  I noted some spots that have cracked, particularly on the trunk and roof.  So, the paint job, while very nice, is not perfect.

That is a pretty car!

Here’s a detail of the runningboard delete.

An excellent Packard !

1938 Packard V-12 Roadster - a great looking and great running V-12 Packard!

1940 Packard 180 Club Sedan model 1806. Fresh Valve job, all new brakes, ready to enjoy now. More photos in a few days. SOLD

1940 PACKARD 120 Club sedan. 8 cylinder, overdrive, radio, heater, excellent restored condition. Drives like a new car! SOLD.

This 1955 Packard Patrician is Packard’s top of the line 4 door sedan, a luxurious and powerful car!  It’s loaded with features – 352 cubic inch V-8, 4 barrel carburetor, Twin-Ultramatic transmission, Power Steering, Power Brakes, Power Windows, Power seat, Radio, Power antenna, Tinted Glass, and torsion bar load leveler suspension.  And, the delightful thing about this car is that all of those things work properly!

A good looking car, with a recent paint job, and a very thick file of restoration receipts.  It’s an original California delivery car, sold new in San Diego.

The load leveler feature deserves a special note – this car’s load leveller system works exactly as it should.  If you’re not familiar with the system, all 4 wheels have a torsion bar, which is connected to a very large electric motor. The car senses load imbalances, and adjusts front and back to keep the car level.  So, let’s say you have to put some really heavy items in the trunk, the car will still ride level.  Another benefit of the system is the suspension is both firm and really comfortable at the same time, and it handles road irregularities beautifully.

Note the black California license plate.  The tail lights are in nice shape, as is the center emblem.

Nice!  The tires on this car are very recent radial whitewalls.

.

.

Here’s a video of the car in operation!

The former owner lavished a lot of effort and expense on this car.

One of the things he didn’t do was to plate the front bumper, which I think could use some attention.

Here’s the 352 Cubic inch V-8, with 4 Barrel carburetor.  It runs great – quiet, smooth, with excellent oil pressure and quiet lifters, an important thing to look for in these V-8 Packards.

The engine bay is reasonably clean but not show detailed. Ivory is the correct color for 1955 Packard Engines.

All as it should be !  Mechanically this car is great, with everything operational.  The brakes were recently and completely redone, including rebuilt power booster, wheel cylinders, hoses, brake linings and springs to the tune of $1,500 !

The interior is beautiful, done in the original brocade, purchased from SMS auto fabrics. The fabric is bright, brilliant and exactly correct, and the seat foam was redone too – it’s a very comfortable car to sit in and drive!  The plain sections are done in vinyl.

Beautiful dashboard, bright, clear gauges, and everything works, too!  Ok, the clock doesn’t work, but that’s the only thing that doesn’t.

Wow that dashboard is pretty!

Excellent back seat and doorpanels

Here’s another view of the back seat and doorpanel.  Note the backside of the front seat is the original, it shows the slightest bit of discoloration.

Beautiful emblem on the roof

Looks really nice and correct!

Nice!

Nice!

If you dial BE-4-3261, will anyone at Kettner Packard answer?  You’ll note the paint was done on the doorjambs.  The former owner stripped the chrome and parts from the car in order to have it painted, so the details are nice.  The paint job is a decent quality single stage finish – very nice, but not a $10,000 show paint job.  I noted a couple of chips here and there, but overall the paint looks very nice, and the fact that it was done with all the chrome and trim removed really makes it nicer.

The rear bumpers are shiny, but the chrome shows some age.  I think it’s the original plating.

In short – a nicely done car ready for adventure.  It’s not a show car, but it’s very nice, correct, and totally operational!

Here’s a look at the Vault Trip to Detroit – a visit to the outstanding concours at St. Johns, and a view of the Packard Plant.

This is the famous Packard concept car, the Balboa – freshly restored, and making it’s debut at the St. John’s Concours.

And here’s where the Packard Balboa was built, the famous, and now crumbling Packard Factory on East Grand Boulevard.  One photo can’t really capture this whole thing, which is spectacular in it’s own way,  sort of like looking at Roman Ruins and contemplating what went before.

Here’s a trip inside, done by people who are more adventurous than me, the videographers from  “Stoned Planet”.  Hmm.  Thanks you guys for this tour of the inside, hope you found your way out!

There’s another very interesting video, here at the Detroit News:

Well that’s enough contemplation of doom and ruin!  let’s get back to the car pictures!

St. Johns had a great class of station wagons this year.  This is a ’59 Cadillac Broadmoor skyview, built by Superior Coach for the Broadmoor hotel in Colorado. This car also made it’s debut at St. John’s.

.

Is this the best 1954 Packard Convertible available now?  I think it is!  It has been completely professionally  restored, and looks and acts almost like a new car!

Absolutely beautiful!  And loaded with options, including Power Steering, Power Brakes, power windows, Power seat, and power top.  Everything works like it is supposed to! It has the factory AM radio (with integral and hidden upgrade to AM/FM + MP3) and of course heater / defroster.  How about those Packard wire wheels?

Lots of beautiful chrome !  and it is beautiful, too,  all replated when it was restored.

Note the beautiful grille emblem.

As we open up the door, we see the excellent leather upholstery

And the Beautifully restored steering wheel and dashboard.

it’s like being at the Packard Dealer in 1954!

Lovely rear compartment, done in leather of course.

Doorpanel and trim look like new.

Fresh weatherstripping and clean doorjamb.

Power windows, and they all work, too!

Super clean underneath the dashboard. Notice the “Easamatic Power Brake” script on the brake pedal – They loved those crazy feature names back then!

The radio looks stock and correct, but it has AM/FM capability, AND a wire for your MP3 player or IPod.  Pretty cool!

The top bows are nicely restored, too, with chrome hinge rivets.

Here’s the 359 Cubic Inch Packard Straight 8 engine, with 4 barrel carburetor, hydraulic lifters, and 212 Horsepower!  This was the final and ultimate refinement of Packard’s straight 8 engine, and it had the most power and best characteristics possible!

Nice!  Ready for show right now!  All labels and finishes correct. note the hydraulic pump mounted on the firewall, which operates the top, windows, and power seat.  It has been filled with ATF so the system won’t corrode.  ( they were originally filled with brake fluid at the factory, which caused all kinds of problems.  The ATF is much better)

The closer you look, the better it is!

Clean underneath, too!

Note the new exhaust system, and the clean finish of the chassis

Clean, Clean, Clean!

Lovely Packard wire wheels.

Excellent glass throughout.

I had to look really hard to find a fault with this car, but here goes – these chrome headlight bezels are difficult to plate, and sometimes the concave surfaces don’t get as much chrome as they should.  The tailight bezels have the same minor issue.

A spectacular car !

Here is an absolutely beautiful 1936 Packard 1401 Eight Sedan, on the 134 inch wheelbase.  This is one of the nicest sedans I’ve seen! The deep black paint and bodywork are of the first rank, the interior is done exactly as it should be, and the car runs and drives like a new one.

It’s nicely equipped, with Goddess of Speed hood ornament, sidemounts with sidemount mirrors,  trunk rack, radio and heater. The radio is a very special piece, it’s been reworked to look completely authentic, but it will play both AM and FM !

I especially like the “flat” trunk,  the styling is very sleek.  Look at the reflections in the paint, it’s spectacular!

Here’s the right side – absolutely stunning!

Wow! Look at the chrome plating, it’s all in tip top condition.

Absolutely beautiful fresh interior, done as it should be in wool broadcloth.  It has a subtle stripe pattern on the seat cushions, and plain material on the doorpanels and seat sides.

Beautiful steering wheel and excellent dashboard and gauges.

It’s like walking into the Packard dealer in 1936!

Wow!  Look at the doorpanel, and how nice the woodgrain accents are!

Rear seat is just as perfect as the front!

Another view of the rear seat – spectacular!

Very clean engine bay. The 320 Cubic Inch Straight 8 Engine runs exactly as it should!  Quiet, smooth, plenty of power, and great oil pressure.  The transmission is nice too, with easy synchromesh operation, and a precise feel when you put it through the gears.

The chrome plated thermostatic shutters look great and work great

There’s the right side of the engine – nice and clean here, too! This car runs beautifully.

Nicely finished inside the trunk, too.

Beautiful headliner.  Note the courtesy light is working while the door is open.

This car is just delightful – both in appearance and in operation! Well worth the money being asked !

This 1941 Packard 120 was the subject of a very recent – 2005 – high quality restoration, with extensive photo documentation.  It is beautiful and delightful in every way, from the gorgeous paint job to the wonderful and correct interior to the mechanical excellence.

Wow! Most Packard 120’s don’t get a beautiful restoration like this – it’s one of the nicest Packard 120’s that I’ve ever seen!

The chrome plating is spectacular. Note the Packard Accessory driving lamps.

The tires are very fresh.  This view shows why the 120 was such a sales success – for only $1230, you got a car that looked a whole lot like the big senior 160  that cost $1,750

As nice in person as it is in these photographs

The runningboards are in beautiful condition, too

Love the runningboards! People who know these cars know how hard it is to find an excellent runningboard.

The interior is stunning – done in the correct wool broadcloth.  All that dash plastic is beautiful, too.

Beautiful steering wheel, with no cracks! Look at the dashboard, how sharp it is!  This is what I mean when I talk about how good this car is, it’s just nicer than most of the other cars left in existence.

Fantastic woodgraining on the window surrounds, beautiful doorhandles and proper leather covered armrest.

Leather edged sun visors

Nice Heater

Super clean under the dash.

Lovely rear compartment.  Again, done in the correct wool broadcloth.

Wow!

Nice, clean, Straight 8 engine! It runs as good as it looks!

Nice and fresh looking!

Nice decal on the air cleaner.  In general, a tidy and well done engine bay!

Clean trunk – with correct ribbed trunk mat , as well as the “flocked” material that re-creates what the factory did on the sheetmetal sides and floor. You don’t often see this treatment, because it’s hard to do. But, this owner figured it out! Again, most cars don’t have this level of attention to detail.

Here’s the jack and bag.

Inside the trunk as nice as the outside!

Here is just a sample of the photo documents on the restoration.  It was restored once back in 1973, and then again in the 2004 /2005 timeframe.

And they spent a lot of money getting it right!

Lots of dough spent – so you can have a more enjoyable car!

Wow! This car could be yours for way, way less than it cost to restore!

1941 Packard 180 Touring Sedan model 1908. 356 Cubic inch straight 8, Factory Overdrive, luxurious top of the line 180 Interior. SOLD

.

Here is an extremely rare car – it’s a 1940 Packard 180 Club sedan, on the 127 inch wheelbase.  It’s a model 1806, same as the Darrin for that year.  The 180’s had a number of special features compared to the 160.  The hood trim was the more rich looking crosshatch vent style,  and the interior was quite luxurious, with extensive use of plastic, wool  broadcloth carpeting in front, and lambswool style carpeting in the rear.  The Hubcaps on this car are correct for an early delivery car ( November, 1939 ).  According to a very knowledgeable Packard Authority, there were only 1,900 Packard 180’s of ALL bodystyles built in 1940.  And, with the Exception of the Packard Darrin, This is the sportiest and lightest bodystyle of the 180 line.

.

This car has been in Southern California for a long time – here it is posed with the 1976 Rose Parade court. that Smilin’ guy in the center is the friend of the ’40 Packard owner at the time.  The car was used to Chauffer these ladies around during the Rose Parade. He told me that his girlfriend at the time was a bit annoyed that he got to ride around with all the beauty queens!

.

And here it is in the present day – note the nice bumperguard, and the new for ’40 Sealed Beam headlamps.

.

Sometime during the late 1970’s, it was sold at a MovieWorld Cars of Stars auction to a well known local collector and restorer.  Those MovieWorld auctions were pretty spectacular, at the time they were the biggest sale in Southern California, and they had some very big league classics up for bid!  I went to most of these auctions as a young kid, and even got hired to drive the cars through, which was a huge kick for a 15 year old kid with a learner’s permit!

.

This car is super solid, rust free and straight. The black paint is very nice – there is a note in the glovebox that says it was painted in 1991, and that seems right. Another thing to note in this photo is how nice the runningboard rubber is.

.

Note the nice trunk rack.  Also note the period correct accessory turn signals, which work great!

.

That is a good looking car!

.

Lovely in profile – note the sidemounts, the Goddess of Speed and sidemount mirrors.

.

Here’s the dashboard – this dashboard was reproduced by the Nethercutt Collection in Aluminum sometime in the 1960’s, to replace the original unstable plastic.  Plastic was new in 1940, and those original dashboards cracked and warped.  So, this dasbhoard looks very nice, the gauges are good, and all of the instruments work. The Radio and Clock, however, do not work.

.

There’s the Deluxe “Banjo” Steering wheel, – Beautifully restored and re-cast, with shift knob to match

.

Another View, showing the original wool MossTred Carpeting, which is still really nice.  The seats were re-upholstered at some point. I would say the seats are ok for tour use, but might be a good target for a re-do at some point, I am not totally in love with the material that was used.

.

The Steering wheel is just beautiful!

.

The doorpanels and headliner are totally original, and in really good shape. Note the vanity cabinet and embroidered pull strap.

.

Here’s the vanity, with 2 mirrors, a perfume bottle, and an address book.

.

Here are the rear seats, and you can also see that original , luxurious carpeting.

.

The original carpeting is remarkable!

.

Here’s the driver’s doorpanel, note the small torn section at the lower front corner.

The engine runs great!  It’s a 356 cubic inch engine, with the correct “CC” prefix for 180.  It has just been the subject of a thorough valvejob, with all new exhaust valves. We also installed new mechanical AND auxillary electric fuel pumps, new fan belt, spark plugs, and spark plug wires.  It runs beautifully now, with that great, even exhaust note that you hear when the engine is running on all 8 cylinders.

.

the prior owner re-wired the car with the correct cloth backed wires, so this car is in great shape electrically.  The lights, instruments, and overdrive all work great!

.

Here’s the rebuilt carburetor and fuel pump.

.

One more view of the great running 356 straight 8 engine!

.

Here’s the trunk – it’s carpeted, with what looks like the original material. It’s also nice , solid, and rust free if you lift it up. The weatherstripping retainer lip is also nice and rust free.

.

there’s the original jack.

.

And a close-up of the turn signal .

.

Not a showcar, but a  great looking, super rare and desirable car, ready to enjoy now!

1938 Packard Super 8 extremely high quality restoration documented with receipts. Operates like a new Packard! CCCA First Place winner. Show or CAR-A-VAN ready! SOLD

This 1938 Packard V-12 Roadster is a beautiful object indeed – and, it runs as beautifully as it looks!

1938 was a great year for the Packard V-12. the factory design included power assisted hydraulic brakes, power assisted clutch, and independent front suspension. My opinion is that they were the best driving CCCA Classic car ever put on the road. Although it’s a big car, it drives and handles easily, totally capable of modern roads and traffic.  When it was new, it must have been a revelation in comparison with lesser cars!

Nice chrome!  Note the center bar bumper guard and Trippe lights.

Also note the near-new Tires.  There has been a lot of recent work done on the car, including the power boosters, new porcelain on the manifolds, new tires, and much more.

the Rumbleseat is a great feature, this one is nicely trimmed in maroon leather.

Nice trunk rack

The paint job is very high quality, but it shows it’s age in a few places, such as this chip on the headlight shell.

Here it is on the right side – more impressiveness and beauty.

And here it is with the top down and top boot installed!

Love that rumbleseat

Lovely dashboard – here you can see the correct for ’38 Grey dash, and the Floor shifter.

beautiful Maroon Leather seats in the correct pattern

Excellent instruments

the ’38 Dashboard is one of the best looking dashboards ever put into a car.

Excellent wood trim and doorpanel. Note the ’38 window and doorhandles, a 1 year only item

Here’s a view of the radio and heater.  The radio is present, but doesn’t make any noise.

Very pretty V-12 Engine, with fresh porcelain from Prairie Porcelain.  Also note the new wiring harness.  it runs really great – quiet lifters, good oil pressure, and it runs very, very nice and cool. It also re-starts right away, even after some driving.  I was very impressed with the driving experience of this car.

Correct distributor cap cover, but non-original coils.

Here’s the right side – more pretty V-12 excellence.

Another view of the interior

I noticed some paint chips on the lower edge of the golf bag door.

Door fit is excellent on both sides

Wow!

Nice inner top bows. The top shows a bit of age – good for driving, would miss a point at a show

A very, very impressive car – not a showcar, but an extremely nice one, that has been all sorted out mechanically and is ready to drive and enjoy now!
