A big year at Pebble Beach – Almost every one of the existing front wheel drive Ruxtons made the field,  and, a postwar car won best of show!  The last time that happened was in 1968, when a ’64 Maserati Mistral won.  But more on that later, let’s look at the photos.

As usual, there was a HUGE crowd in Carmel for the end of the Tour d’Elegance.

Ferrari on the march.  There was a class for 250 Testa Rossa, and 20 cars were entered.  An impressive display indeed.

A Phantom V  from the Rolls Royce Phantom Postwar class.

A ’53 Pegaso Z102 Touring spyder.  one of my favorites, it’s been seen at Monterey for years, and it’s a great looking car.

The 1909 Pierce-Arrow 36-UU 5 passenger touring.  Made before Pierce-Arrow went to their trademark headlamp-in-fender

1962 Ghia L6.4 coupe

Looking at this SJ Duesenberg, you might think the bodywork is European – it’s not, it was a Rollston Body made for the original owner to take the Grand Tour of Europe!

Here’s a steamer – the 1902 White model B Stanhope steamer

A ’41 Chrysler Town & Country station wagon,  often referred to as a Barrelback

A big Bentley from the Tour d’ Elegance

Ferrari.

1929 Bentley Speed Six Saoutchik drophead coupe.

1925 Bentley 3 Litre Speed model Taylor Tourer.

A Ruxton on the move ! Ruxtons were featured, and the turnout was nothing less than heroic – 16 Cars were listed in the program,  of an estimated 19 cars known to exist .  Jim Fasnacht has done some very interesting and original research, culminating in a new book on Ruxton called “The Ruxton Automobile”.

It’s steam not oil smoke!

1941 Mercedes-Benz 770K .  A huge car with tremendous presence.

1958 BMW 503 Series II Cabriolet.  Another example of Pebble Beach bringing out a car that we just don’t see at the cars & coffee – they bring us the most interesting cars to look at !

The crowd roared.

1939 Lagonda V-12 Rapide Drophead coupe.  Note how the body colors are treated all the way into the fenderskirt!

Hispano-Suiza

Pay attention to this car, a 1954 Ferrari, because we’ll see it again on Sunday !

The Tatra class was super interesting.  Remarkable cars from a remarkable designer.

Nice try buddy, but your rat-rod style bulletnose Studebaker coupe has been diverted away from the tour d’elegance!  And with that we’ll close our photos of the T d’E,  and move along !
