This 1939 Rolls-Royce Landaulet by Windovers was built in 1939 for Mrs J.T. Patterson of the United Kingdom.

.

It made it’s way to the US, as so many of them did, sometime in the 1960’s, when one of the stalwarts of the Southern California Classic Car Club of America purchased it and restored it.  His name was Bill Hawkes, and I remember him and his family at all those 1970’s CCCA tours, driving his Rolls Royce and having a great time.  He got many trophies with it too, including an AACA National First Prize in 1971.

Here it is coming out of its garage – after a fairly lengthy slumber – even though it’s a garage, I feel like it qualifies as a barn find!  We purchased it from Bill’s Daughter.

And here are  the trophies, which are included with the sale.  Bill Hawkes was very active with this Rolls Royce, and these trophies show that.  However, even though  the restoration is quite old and it isn’t a show winner now, it’s still a great example of the pre-war Rolls Royce.

So after some cleaning and new fluids and fresh gasoline and a few other incidentals, Here’s what it looks like now. It runs nicely, with very good power, incredibly smooth transmission, and powerful brakes. IMG_1756.

The landaulet top is a great feature, gives the occupants of the rear seat some sunshine!

The Traditional Rolls Royce Grille looks super!

Formal and stately

Here’s the rear section showing the top mechanism.

Here it is with the landaulet top in the closed position

The door fit on this car is very good, the hinges and underlying structural body wood are in great shape.

Bess was Bill Hawke’s wife.

IMG_1768.

The paint job is old, probably lacquer, and has it’s share of chips and flaws.

IMG_1775.

On the road it’s still a Rolls-Royce, and it draws admiring stares and waves !

IMG_1784.

Windovers was a well known coachbuilder, and provided many Rolls-Royce automobiles with their bodywork.

Here’s the chauffer compartment.  The leather must have been very high quality  back when it was installed because it’s still pretty soft and feels good when you sit in it.

IMG_1791.

The steering wheel and dashboard are in good shape.  The wood is decent, with a few flaws but overall nice.

IMG_1793The speedometer, amp meter, and oil pressure gauge  work. The Fuel gauge does not work. The temperature guage reads too high, I got the digital laser temp reader out and realized that the temp guage registers inaccurately high.  The battery charges, and the oil pressure stays steady at 20 PSI on the road.  I had a good drive when I took it out for the photos.

And of course the speaker so the car owner could tell the chauffer what direction to take!

IMG_1797.

The rear compartment was done in cloth, which shows some fading and age.

Some nice wood and cabinetry

IMG_1803The driver’s side rear vanity / ashtray is there, but passenger side is missing.

Overhead valve 6 cylinder Rolls Royce engine – the original Engine, number G7WT.  It runs nicely, and has plenty of power. The engine specification is 6 cylinders, with overhead valves, 4,257 CC, 4 speed manual transmission with synchro-mesh.

IMG_1811.

There’s an aftermarket generator hooked up now, presumably the original one quit charging a while back.

IMG_1813.

Here’s the exhaust side.

IMG_1814.

Another view. I was very pleased with how well this engine woke up.

The original engine!

I like the trunk lid, with ribbed strips in case you want to mount an external trunk.
