Beatifully finished in Cavalier Maroon.  This car is extremely rare – according to Bev Kime’s authoritative book on Packard, only 672 Packard 180’s of ALL body styles were built for the short 1942 Model year.

The Formal Sedan body style was a window into the thinking of the upper crust world of the time – This car bridged the gap between a divider window limousine, which of course MUST be operated by a chauffeur,  and the slightly more modern customer who, by 1942, realized that Packard had made these cars so smooth, so quiet, so powerful, and so easy to drive, that he could actually drive the car himself if he chose!  The divider window was still there in case he had to really show off in front of all his peers and hire a chauffeur.

The side grills are horizontal in 1942.

This car is on the 138″ wheelbase, leaving enough room for 1 jumpseat in back.

The hubcaps are specific to 1942 also, with a double ridge at the edge of the cap.

Beautiful.

Beautiful dashboard – note the radio blocker plate – the original owner might have been fearful of distractions to the Chauffeur!  The dash looks like new.

Just as it appeared in the Packard Showroom!

Spectacular!

Here’s a view of the tan wool interior.  Since this was intended as an owner/driver car, the front seat was upholstered in cloth, rather than the more austere black leather for a chauffeur only limousine.

The window frames are real wood, with german silver inlay pieces.  The 180 got the most deluxe trim!

Sumptuous!

Here’s the single jumpseat, and the storage compartment on the right side.

This compartment has the clock as an outer adornment.

And the little triangular footrests too.

the Classic Car Club of America doesn’t hand these senior badges out lightly – the car has to win a first place in national competition!

Nicely detailed engine bay.  The engine is the correct for ’42 CE prefix 356 cubic inch straight 8 engine – one of Packards crowning acheivements in smoothness and power.   Just an example of what makes this a great engine – the crankshaft counterweights are extra big and heavy to put the engine in proper balance. Packard had to design the crank weights to be bolted on and then the bolts welded.  The end result was an extremely heavy but vibration free rotating assembly.

IMG_3974.

Another change for ’42 – the Carter WDO carburetor, with starter switch integral to the carburetor.

IMG_3975.

Nicely finished! This engine had factory hydraulic lifters too, for silent valvetrain operation.  What we are looking at here is the basis of the modern automobile as we know it today!  Packard was an engineering driven company, and they let their technical skills be known by their advanced products.  When you spent your money on a Packard, you got your money’s worth!

Impressive!

Beautiful. Formal. Dignified.  Capable of high speed modern freeway driving!
