This 1947 Lincoln was built by Mal McDonald, who was an original hot-rodder – a dry lakes competitor back in the early 1950’s, and a serious car enthusiast, especially high performance Fords.  He loved the looks of the Lincoln Continental, but as a hot rodder, he had to make it faster!  So he installed a completely rebuilt early Chrysler Hemi engine with a powerflite automatic transmission, and finished it off with Ford front disc brakes and GM style power steering.  And, I can tell you after driving it, that it drives almost modern – lots of power and torque,  very pleasant indeed!

Mal has, sadly, passed on, and his widow asked me to sell the Hemi Lincoln.

IMG_2580.

It looks completely stock and authentic on the outside.

Nice chrome.

IMG_2586.

Nice straight body too.

Notice the reflections – this was a high quality paint job, done in 1994.  Mal drove this car all the time – he kept it up and did the necessary maintenance.  So it shows the signs of driving and use, but this is a car that has been operational and useable for Mal – and now, for the new owner!

Here’s the origin of the term “Continental Kit” – because all of the Continentals had a factory installed rearmounted spare tire.

Chrysler Fire Power!  Improvements abound, including 12 Volt system, modern alternator,  and a split system modern master cylinder for the front disc brakes.

Here’s the Receipt from Pick’s Racing engines, a well known and high quality rebuilder in Santa Ana, CA.  Completely rebuilt to the tune of $8,546 !  They also ran it on the dyno, acheiving 247 horsepower at 4500 RPM.

IMG_2614.

The carburetor is a Holley 2 barrel mounted to the Chrysler factory intake manifold.

IMG_2616.

The engine runs great!  It’s very smooth and powerful, you know there’s something more under the hood when you drive it.  I noticed a lifter tick when it’s cold, but it goes away upon warmup.

IMG_2600.

The interior carries the stock and authentic look, with original pattern seats and dashboard, although you can see a more modern stereo mounted below the original radio grille.

IMG_2602.

The steering wheel is just beautiful, recast in the original maroon translucent material with a beautiful horn emblem too.

IMG_2604.

Here’s the rear compartment, in nice shape. The leather interior was done by a local high quality upholstery shop, Westminster Upholstery, with receipts to prove it.

IMG_2606.

Note the seatbelt installation.  The carpeting is tired and could stand to be replaced.

IMG_2608.

Nicely done doorpanel with low profile speaker.  The power windows are modern electric units .  Right now, they go down but don’t go up. They use a modern GM style power window motor.

IMG_2609.

Beautiful dashboard.

Mal won this trophy in 1951 – with another car, but there he was at the dawn of the hot rodding movement, going 108 Miles per Hour at the Bell Timing Association event!  I think this trophy gives us a window into Mal’s drive to make his car better and faster than when it left the Lincoln factory in 1947 !  The trophy is included with the car, as are some spare parts.

IMG_2596.

That’s a great looking car!  Not a show car now, but beautiful nonetheless.

A great car, and a tribute to the hot rodding spirit of it’s owner of many decades!
