This 1948 Ford Al Sherman Sprint car has been beautifully restored, and is offered for sale by the Vault Classic Cars dealership.

.

The 1948 Al Sherman Ford Flathead sprint car!  Restored to an exceptionally high standard.

.

What a profile!  This car has the best components and a great history.  Al Sherman ran this car as a Flathead Ford powered car  from ’48 through ’54 on tracks throughout the East.

.

Transverse leaf spring suspension with beautiful chrome axle and Halibrand real Magnesium wheels.

.

Side exhausts, wishbone axle links – note both front and rear are solid axles – and the Edelbrock cylinder heads peeking out the side of the hood. The famous engine shop Pick’s Racing Engines rebuilt this ’53 Mercury 255 Cubic inch engine, the largest Flathead V-8 that Ford ever made.

.

Took a lot of guts to climb in one of these and go racing against a bunch of other guys with a rollbar that didn’t quite make it over the top of your helmet!

.

Incredible detail shown here. The lettering, the paint quality, the 1953 AAA registered race car decal. Wow!

.

Although it looks tight, I am over 6 feet tall and I can fit in this car and operate the controls.  There’s no extra room, and you sit very straight, but once you’re in it all fits.  That transmission is a Ford 3 speed transmission with reverse and a starter.    I like the pad on the steering wheel, as if that would save you in a crash!

.

Everywhere you look the detail work is tip top. The transmission is a Ford unit, with working reverse and a starter!

.

Spartan yet functional dashboard.  that lever just outside the cockpit is the brake handle.

.

And speaking of brakes, here they are, rear disc brakes.  As is typical with sprint cars of this vintage, there are no front brakes. Since the car has been displayed indoors and not driven for quite some time,  the brakes do not work, and will require re-commissioning prior to actually driving this car. Further, it is sold as a race car only, on a Bill of Sale only, there is NO TITLE, it’s a race car! The buyer is responsible to thoroughly pre-check the car before driving or racing it.  We have never driven this car, and it will  need a full mechanical inspection conducted BY THE BUYER before it is driven.  It is not legal to drive this car on the street.

.

More detail on the brakes.

.

the engine is a 1953 Mercury Flathead with dual Stromberg carburetors and Edelbrock cylinder heads.  This engine was rebuilt by the famous shop Pick’s Racing Engines.

.

Again, the high quality and high state of detail of this restoration is evident here.

.

Absolutely beautiful!

.

A visual delight.

.

Absolutely spectacular!
